Following on from my previous thread about finding someone to rebuild my box with a modified crown wheel and pinion here is the outcome.
Background is, I've always felt that the box is geared too short for a V8 even with six gears it was always a compromise plus felt like it needed another for motorway driving. CMS do a CW&P to make the gearing 15% longer, this should then make for a more relaxed drive.
With all parts duly purchased and delivered within two days of ordering(!!!) I set about finding a specialist to crack the box open. Now this is where it gets interesting/frustrating as there are about three companies in the UK that have the equipment/knowledge to do this, a 50 tonne press is required to 'pull' the cases apart and for reassembling! I eventually found Sports & Classic Ltd in Knutsford via a recommendation from the boys in the Porker forum, after a detailed conversation it was evident that this guy knew what he was talking about, after a 5 hour drive the box was in his workshop smile phew!
Here are a few photos that Mike send me during the strip down and rebuild.
I also purchased a billet side plate from CMS

Mike then came across a problem with the pinion, it was hitting the LSD and was solid!
Now how about this for customer service, Mike phones CMS and chats with them about the pinion problem and comes up with a answer.
Turns out CMS have fitted the pinion shaft in boxes with 'their' LSD which is quite a bit smaller than the standard Porsche LSD! Solution was to grind a few mm off the face of the pinion.

Three weeks later and another 5 hour drive to collect the box, very pleased with whole experience. Mike dated my box to 1999 as it has smaller bearings plus he had to make/get made up shims, which from 2000 were updated by Porsche.
My car is still in pieces, hasn't been on the road for about a year now, so can't test out the box until next year, will report back when I do though.....

Graham, great info indeed. Is this a 96/50 TT box and did you get the totally rebuilt or just fitted a bigger ration C & P?

Hi Daniel,
The box is from the 996 Carrera C2 a Getrag manufactured box, not really suitable for a V8 as it can't take too much abuse, known faults are second gear pop out (had that 4 years ago and repaired) and bearing failures.
I had a basic check over when it was stripped and just the CW&P replaced oh and the side plate for a bit of added strength.

I have a 96/50 TT with the reinforced side plate. Just need to get the engine, ancillaries and the fuel system to finish the build when budget allows...

That's interesting, I thought the weakest link was the smaller crown wheel set-up compared to the Turbo boxes, when you fixed the second gear pop out issue did you replace with Porsche parts or "uprated" aftermarket?

The first rebuild was done by Gbox in Colarado many years ago 2009 I pretty sure they used their own uprated detent and dog ring.

I remember that gearbox. To answer the question of if it was modified to give more support to the 2nd gear.

Yep, it sure was. When I worked there we always modified the needed areas, so no worries on that.

If anyone is in need of the part to make the 2nd gear engage better let me know.
