I'm sure it has been covered before, so apologies, but I don't know the jargon to search on.

I'm thinking of going to France, it would be good to use my iPad to watch some UK TV (motor racing). Is it possible to hide my location from Sky so that I can watch TV.?
Some use will be on wifi, other using a PAYG french SIM.

I guess I could search on foreign websites (IIRC Iraqi TV used to retransmit UK sport) but the quality was poor.

Thanks for your help.

Assuming you have a UK sky account yes.

You said your on your iPad so this should work. It worked on my iPhone so can't see why it shouldn't.

Download an app called Avast Secure Line. It has a week long trial for free so good for holiday. In there you can select what country you want to virtually be in.

Then on iOS, go into Settings, General, VPN, and make sure Avast Secure Line is selected, and make sure "Not Connected" switch is set to on.

Probably other apps out there, but I used that and it was nice, quick and free to use (atleast free for a short time).

VPN is what's needed and in order for you to make an informed choice as to which one you go for, have a look at this.

VPN as above or you could try "unlocator" which has been reviewed in this forum and works pretty well - usually get a week's free trial.

Your router may have it built in. My Asus for example, has simple PPTP VPN server built in so when I'm travelling if I want to watch iPlayer I just connect and then all traffic gets routed via home.

(I have FTTC as you need a pretty good up speed to be able to stream via VPN)

Free Wifi = insecure. I use Disconnect VPN client whenever I'm connected to a network that isnt my home wireless

Why have I got "Advertisement" next to my post? I wasn't trying to advertise anything and the annotation persists even though making it lower case and in quotation marks. All I intended was to share some information about something that had worked for me......

Sorry OP to piggyback on your thread but I'm interested in answers with a twist please.

Looks like I'm off on my travels again, just heard today that I landed an assignment in Qatar.

Are there solutions to be able to use Sky Go on a more continual basis, say for weeks rather than a few days on holiday or business trips?

Thanks in advance,

V.

I've been using Unblock us for the best part of 2 years from the US and a couple of other places for that very use.

Tunnelbear as mentioned above is a good alternative if you're shopping around. Unblock Us works better for me as they support more devices (Apple TV etc) and don't require an app - just change the DNS server info on whatever device you're using or at router level and bob's your uncle.

So as not to get "advertisement" on my post - any of the above will work fine - and you might look on local ex-pat websites like thissmile

Thanks to all for your advice and comments - very comprehensive & most useful . Now I need to make sure I buy a decent data PAYG SIM to ensure I don't miss out on half an F1 race! Either that or park myself outside a Maccie D & use their wifi gratis.

To clarify - I am a Sky subscriber in the UK.

For real?

The 5th post down on every page always has an advert next to it. It's nothing special.

I use 'hotspot shield' to access iplayer and all UK TV catchup and streaming type things. Works well and is not expensive.

I would also like to thank all the contributors and apologise to Sortie for butting in on his thread.

FWIW I am also an all channel (except the dirty ones for family reasons hehe) multi room (3 boxes) UK Sky subscriber.

Many thanks,

V.

Update. Avast Secure Line does not appear to help with access to Sky TV or National Lottery account when using a French Orange SIM or wifi in various locations. Neither seem to agree with VPNs.
