Anyone who listens to commercial radio has probably heard the new add explaining how a red X on the Mway means lane closed?

I can't help but feel a better use of the air time would be to remind to turn their fog lights off, not use a mobile phone when driving, keep left unless overtaking, merge in turn properly etc etc...there are any number of more important (read: annoying) things that people fail on. A red X is usually something seen late at night for roadworks...it's not particularly common.

Poor rant I know...but the add is so patronising and a waste that it makes me cross.

I heard this the other day, just assumed there had been a number of crashes, due to people ignoring the red X

Patronizing as it is sadly, like most adverts, it's that way because it needs to be.

Outside of PH almost everyone is a moron. It's true. They drive in the 'fast lane' when doing over 70. The red X is for everyone else, not them. They also moan when they get fined for ignoring it.

Be safe. Stay inside.

I've seen it [Red X Means Lane Closed] on motorway matrix boards of late with increasing regularity.

Was wondering why the sudden trend?

(Always felt 'keep left unless overtaking' was a more useful default message).

Isn't the red x to inform drivers of a quicker route they can speed down and attempt to merge in at a point they're unaware of before the road works? hm sure that's in the highway code somewhere?!

Good use of pun.

Why is it an add? Why not an ad?

Maybe something to do with hard shoulder running on managed motorways.

It seems plenty of drivers need reminding that driving on the g hard shoulder is not permitted, unless indicated otherwise.

I wonder if its because of all the new, "managed motorways" that are popping up here, there and everywhere. The problem is as we already know, the people who don't understand what the red x means, probably also don't understand what a managed motorway is. They will just continue to bumble along in lane 2, on a 3 lane stretch, or lanes 3 and 4 on the 4 lane stretches.

Off topic, have you got your licence back yet ? Mine actually expired last night, so I don't have one now !

On topic.

I know what the red X means, I have known it seems forever what it/they mean.

It isn't every time I've seen them, but I have experienced difficulty complying with them, especially in very heavy traffic, people aren't willing to enable you to change lanes, and I've chosen to go past the red x rather than stop dead as I sought of think I may be expected to, as that would be plain stupid and dangerous.

Like I say, not every time, not even a majority, but it has happened, anyone else ?

Matrix signs on the M8 stretch between St. James and Glasgow City Centre used to regularly display the message 'Red X is Mandatory'. I just thought it was Holts taking their advertising a bit too far...

They should have an ad to remind all the morons using DRL's to use dipped headlights at night that don't realise their rear lights are not working. mad

I assume it is being done because people are ignoring it/can't work out what it means. Which is one of the most depressing thoughts on the state of driving ability in this country.

The funny thing is though if you listen, the lady says that you should only not go through the lane with the red cross if it is safe to do so which is a bit strange considering they are supposed to be treated like a red traffic light i.e don't go through them under any circumstances.

Sadly not, and sick of fighting the DVLA frown
I may possibly get my car licence back on the 17th of this month, but the LGV may not be until the 17th of May frown I'm not done fighting yet though, although between the DVLA and our local council they both have a very good go at kicking a man while he's down.

I am getting bored of these types of adverts too; The other one is the reminder not to crash into cyclists.

the m27 had the exact same message appear a few weeks back, the day they were turned on there were people in a panic cus they thought it meant lanes are closed NOW

There is also one that appears frequently which says something like "keep left unless overtaking" works for about 30seconds after that sign, then ignored again

Probably a better bet would be just a short, sharp ripoff of somebody else's slogan...

"The Highway Code is for life, not just for your driving test."

I hope I am not the poor sod that gets smashed into the back of on the hard shoulder when someone is not paying attention to the red crosses. We all know it will happen at some point.

Sudden trend is that people are being absolute twunts on 'managed' motorways (such as the M25). Would like to see much stiffer penalties for lane discipline issues on motorways tbh. MLMs, Hard shoulder drivers etc! But perhaps this would be eased if we didn't have this ridiculous rule that you can't drive on a motorway whilst learning - i.e a two stage test or something of the like.
