Let's say you were toying with buying yourself a silly present...

Two thoughts spring to mind...Ferrari 599 GTO or Lamborghini LP670 SV

Any views on either to own or drive, or indeed any other suggestions?

Looks and noise ...1 choice for sheer outrageousness... I suspect both will do equally well on values

I owned both. Without any shadow of doubt, at all, the GTO is about a million times the better car. Faster, sounds MUCH better, more rewarding to drive, much better gearbox. The SV looks wild, in that respect it is unmatched. But it is a dinosaur by comparison. At this level though, it is ALL about what floats your boat the most.

I usually prefer Lamborghinis but I'd have the 599 GTO for the sound alone.

Going by a few recent threads, getting hold of an SV might an issue?

I haven't owned either but have had a bit of time in GTO's, proper big boys wagon and they seem great value, relatively speaking, in todays market. Superb noise and a raw car when it's pushed in the same vein as the CS, Scuderia etc.

Despite having a GTO bias and tracking them with a greedy eye myself, I doubt you'd ever look back and regret getting either.
Nice dilemma to have.

Unlike AndrewD I've not driven the 670SV but I have shared a tunnel with him in our GTOs along with an Aventador. I must admit the Aventador is a mad beast and with its huge blue flame thrown from its exhaust no more than a few feet from me offered a glorious sight. However the sound of two GTOs in the tunnel was out of this world too. I'm not neutral but having bought my 599 GTO from new there's not been a day where I felt it was anything other than extremely special. And in time this car will become a significant classic. So for value alone, the GTO wins comfortably. Add to this the GTO is a car that demands and rewards total respect when driven hard and the decision should be a no brainer. Enjoy.

Andrew, that's a really interesting insight and kind of assures what I suspected, Lambos for drama, Ferrari for longer term pleasure.

So with my Devils advocate hat on, when I had my 599, I don't remember thinking it needed more power, so what makes the GTO so special!

Bertie, the engine, exhausts and gearbox in the GTO are its defining points imo. Just so much unlimited power on tap, easily able to overwhelm the rear tyres smile and when you are on a spirited drive, exhausts hot, the crackle and pop on the downshifts is immense. The car has a wider front track than the standard 599 and in practice it means understeer is pretty much eradicated, without the car being pointy and nervous like a 458 speciale. But it comes with 599 advantages like good visibility, good driving position and ease of manoeuvring. It is an insane car. The only slight drawback is that, like you might have found with the 599, it is quite big. For me that did limit its appeal a bit in the UK compared to Switzerland where it was an absolute animal on the mountain passes. As Camlet says, they are unforgettable cars and will maybe be future classics. Get one with the carbon bucket seats as they just suit the car better than the daytonas imo.

Hi Andrew. I was in the market for a 599GTO earlier this year and I seem to recall you mentioned yours was for sale. Did you sell the 599GTO in the end? Falconwood

It would be fantastic to say I'd owned both, but in my days at Lambo Brum I had the opportunity to drive both, and in essence it comes down to what you want from the car.

If you want to open the garage and be blown away by sheer spectactle and madness, then go for the SV.

If you want the better car, go for the GTO, it left an indelible impression on me.

Decisions, Decisions... If only all decisions in life had such positive outcomes!

interesting that when evo did a feature on the greatest 'analogue' drivers supercars, including the f1, the lp670 sv was taken along, not the 599 GTO iiRC... they liked it so much they featured it again this year...

sept 2013 edition.... are these the greatest supercars ever made..... f1, zonda, f40, f50, cgt, sv and noble.

quote "it's intense, and pure magic when you get the sv in the sweet spot""delivers an unforgettable experience that wants for nothing. Fabulous"

so, get the one that gives you the best boner.... hth

GTO is much more special IMHO.
Difficulty will be finding one if you want RHD.
Merry Christmas to all on the Ferrari forum.

According to Mr Thecarfinder on FChat, he has 52 recorded RHD Vins in the UK. Mr Tremlett puts the total around 80. So although a so called limited run (does Ferrari ever only produce what they claim to be limited?) there is a small but decent pool.

Per SydneyBridge, fair play that DK is pulling in left hookers, though why end users here wouldn't go direct to dealers in Europe fascinates me. Anyway when DK move the 599 GTO from "Prestige" to "Blue Chip" we'll know the 599 GTO is finally on the move up!

Merry Christmas to you too!

Would peoples opinions change if we brought this down a level? Say standard 599 v Murcielago at the £100k level...

Not at all. At sub £ 100K the 599 GTB (assuming FFSH) is a massive car for the money. An effortless cruiser which can also blast to 100 mph in around 7 seconds and not stop accelerating hard, your bottle will go long before the GTB's puff. Mine was in Silverstone with black leather/carbon interior. IMO it was also elegantly menacing.

Just be sure to buy on oil well, mind you with oil dropping faster than 599 residuals less of a worry currently.
