Renault Clio 16V: PH Carpool

The fast old Clio that isn't a Williams has been with its owner for 15 years - here's why

Name: John Mahoney
Car: Renault Clio 16V
Owned since: 2000
Previously owned: "I'm being selective here... Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, Peugeot 306 Rallye, '93 Mini Cooper, '65 Mini Cooper S, '77 Land Rover 88in, '99 Mazda MX-5, VW Mk2 Golf GTI (x2)."

John went after a 205 GTI...
John went after a 205 GTI...
Why I bought it:
"I ended up with the Clio by complete accident. Back in the late 90s my younger self was on the search for a nice 205 GTI, or was it an R5 Turbo, or perhaps even a Charade GTti? I can't remember, in any case it wasn't the Clio but when a penniless mate's Clio 16V missed its service and snapped its cambelt in disgust my dad and I stepped in to save it. The plan was to repair it and sell it on for a quick profit. New head fitted we discovered it needed a new gearbox. New gearbox in we discovered it needed brakes and dampers and the profit margin went out the window, but as soon as I drove it I knew it had to be mine."

What I wish I'd known:
"How difficult it would be to part with. I have owned at least 10 cars since the Clio 16V arrived but somehow, miraculously, it has survived the cull time and time again. Thing is, despite making a career out of writing about cars I'm not at all sentimental about the little Renault. It's just that, in the decade and a half we've been together, I've spent so much on it that parting with the Clio seems impossible. Oh, and I probably owe it my life."

What was just a new head became a lot more!
What was just a new head became a lot more!
Things I love:
"I love the fact it didn't kill me in those early days of our relationship. Whereas an old 205 GTI on part-worn tyres would have had me spinning into the next postcode if I ever dared to drive it quickly the Clio has always been as faithful as the family Labrador. Like the hound it loves to cock a leg (OK, wheel) and play all day long and only bites you when you do something really stupid. But that said, even when you were optimistic about levels of adhesion served up by its four Michelin MXTs the breakaway is always progressive and catchable - crucial for the brave 20 year-old fool that I was.

"The looks have also grown on me. Where once I preferred an R5 Turbo (Raider in blue please) I've come to prefer the Clio's flared front (plastic) and rear arches, offset NACA duct and simple turbine alloys that, today, have banished memories of pining for a Williams."

The basics and not a lot more inside

Things I hate:
"Truth be told I've never enjoyed the weight of its clutch. I've driven Lamborghinis with lighter clutches. After owning one, I also dislike the fact you miss out on a 205 1.9's sheer energy low down with the Clio 16V. In the little Renault it's the case of working that 137hp 1.8-litre hard before you unleash the performance. Think of that lump as a Gallic VTEC and you'll understand its frenetic character.

"Sadly, when that performance does arrive it's also mild by today's hot hatch standards. Taking 7.8 seconds to hit 60mph it's well off the pace but at least it sounds interesting on the way and the gearchange is great by Renault's standard of the time (only average by any one else's.)

"The Clio's short ratios make it exceedingly busy on the motorway and at 80mph I've frequently found myself reaching for another (non-existent) gear. Oh, and the lack of ABS can be a concern too, although it's less of an issue nowadays when I'm more focused on building up apex speed than heroic late braking."

John says the Clio is going this year...

Costs:
"Biggest bill following the head and gearbox being reconditioned has been the complete respray that included fitting two rear wings that could only be sourced from Renault. Earlier I said I wasn't sentimental about my Clio but that's clearly rubbish - at the time the two wings alone were worth more than the value of my car - and that's before the paint and labour were thrown in. The final bill broke my heart and bank account, but with the world's nicest non-Clio Williams I then had to keep it for a few more years."

Where I've been:
"The most significant journey ever was probably to my first ever paid freelance gig at Autocar where I proudly parked the Clio 16V between a 911 GT3 and a BMW M5 in the old Haymarket car park. Both Harris and Sutcliffe (whatever happened to them?) showed genuine interest before telling me to clear off and go and find a spot on the road."

What next?
"At some stage in 2015 my Clio and I will finally part company. Despite being my only automotive constant in a lifetime of flings with numerous other hot hatches I've bought, plus a long line of exotic test cars, it's time for someone else to appreciate my sizeable investment in an old Clio without gold wheels."

Was tempted back in the day when the Renault 5 GT Turbo and then Clio were new but like the John, I originally went for the Charade GTti and ended up a having 4 of them! When changing cars these the Renaults came to mind each time but cost and insurance always ruled them out.

Have always loved the shape of these things. With the flared arches and offset bonnet bulge/vent, it just looks purposeful but not over the top of overstyled like many modern hatchbacks have the tendency to be. Wouldn't mind one myself but I'll probably end up plumping for a 172 or similar as if I did get one of these, I'd want to keep it garaged and (relatively) dry. Not many about and I'd feel terrible seeing it sitting on the street with the rain pelting off it.

The only car Ive really regretted selling, bought one in red on an '93 L plate in 2005. The perfect vehicle for a quick naughty weekend away with Nicole and little chance of Papa catching up. Fast, crap stereo, clutch was almost unbearable saved but for the best seats in any car Ive driven since. And for a strange reason the quantity of dials on the dashboard seemed just right to a then 25 yr old - Vaguely remember a car TV program at the time who interviewed a well heeled youth in London who retold the his father comment about the number of dials being the same as in his Aston! :-) Most memorable drive was going from North London to Leeds, when, somewhere near MK, a stress fracture in the Power Steering pipe caused a surprising white plume of vapour whilst travelling at a motorway canter and deciding that it might be a good idea to slow down as the brakes and steering needed geoff capes. ;-)

I had one of these - One of the last made being a 1996 N-reg in silver with full grey leather trim. Being a late model mine also had the wheels from a renault 19 16v and an ugly air bagged steering wheel. Terrific handling and that little f16 engine were a good combination, funnily enough, mine had also snapped it's cambelt and had a top end re-build. Agree about the peaky engine delivery, but when up in it's power band I always found it to be a really quick car. mine went when I noticed the arches were going on the rear and the whole car was ready for a refresh, I flogged it some young lad for 400quid - I doubt it survived long with him - N something KUF was the reg, I wonder where it is today?

Not driven a valver Clio but did a old K reg 19 16V Chamade many a time (was my older half brothers) many moons ago. I thought the engine shone quite well in the bigger Chamade and sounded quite nice.

Why I went for a mk1 Megane 2.0 16v when I could afford to buy something along those lines myself.

In the early 90s I was after a new hot hatch, and narrowed the choice to the 205 1.9 or the 16v Clio.

I was disappointed by the fact that it felt 'ordinary' until you reached for higher revs. I liked the fact the the Pug felt like a fast car, even when not driving fast.

In the late 90's when I was a 15 year old yoof we used to frequently hang around on street corners, as most normal teenagers did at the time. There were a couple of 'older boys' who each had 'Valvers', a grey one and a red one (much like this one), I remember watching them ttting it past us all showing off but still can hear that screaming 1.8 and absolutely loved the things!

A mate of mine then bought one when we could all drive but it was an absolute dog and it spent more time being repaired than being driven so the love went. I'd still like a go in one today though, just to see.

Oh and, ever heard of 'back to black' smile

I had a Blue 16v too. Lovely car but started to need a bit of work that I didn't want to pay for (rear arches). I px'd it and a few weeks later the garage wrote it off in a crash frown

Mine used to split flames on the overun. J reg with a legal decat and straight through exhaust with a APEXi 5" backbox. Good times.

I had a couple of friends with these back in the day. Back then with the engine screaming away they felt surprisingly fast, especially with cams and exhaust mods.

I have a love hate relationship with these, heart says I love them but head says they should all be in the scrap heap where they belong!

I have had a few of these, a few black ones and one in carmen red. Spend more time fixing them than driving them, but it is worth it when they are on song.

I make up my spannering time now with the equally unreliable vectra cdti runabout, although it has no good points unlike the Clio.

Turbines on the red one are standard.

Mine has black Williams speedlines on it.
