Honda Civic Type R spy shots

The Civic edges closer to production but it doesn't look like the fancy lights will make it!

In case you hadn't noticed, 2015 will be a huge year for Honda. It's back in F1 with McLaren, the NSX has just been shown to the world and in a few weeks the next Civic Type R will be seen in production spec. After years in the doldrums, Honda is firmly back on the enthusiast radar.

Well this is different to the concept...
Well this is different to the concept...
So you will perhaps understand a slight sense of disappointment about these latest Civic Type R spy images. Of course the disguise is exactly intended to throw off the exact proportions but from side-on in particular it looks considerably more tame than the concept. The rear lights are even back on the boot. Still, at least the four big exhausts and the wing have made it.

We remain optimistic about the Type R though; it has to be pretty special after this long, doesn't it? Expect full details to follow leading up to Geneva.

I'm not quite sure how you tell what mood the wing is in from these shots..

Needs to retain the concept looks to stand out and be a success in a tough market. It should be the Jap nutter in a sea of boring euro metal. Bring back the boomerang rear lights Honda!!!

"Well this is different to the concept" sums it up really.

Whilst I'm not really in the market any more I preferred it when it was more lairy. RS Focus looks is the benchmark and this appears to fall short. Annoying also that Honda is persisting with this dumb negligible rear visibility design.

I'll take one in Sapphire Blue please!

I think it's too unfair to judge the looks much until you see it in the metal, but I have no doubts it will be an attractive car.

What is for sure is that if it isn't a good car after all this hype then it will be a huge disappointment. They have to get it right after all the "2015 is Honda's comeback year" stuff.

I would think that Mugen will have a lot more input on special editions this time too, potentially even a similar setup to Ford/Mountune. Mugen have said for a few years they want to build on their relationship with Honda and turbocharged Civic Type will be their easiest opportunity to stretch the performance.

Looking forward to it! biggrin

What the?!!

What happened to the devil wing/lights combination at the back? That was the only reason it was worth buying and they've scrapped it?

I'll be putting my cheque book back in the drawer...

Quite a good point. Are Honda being too fussy trying to get the new Civic right when really they should be getting the new model out an Type R concept into the showrooms.

+ Any sign of testing on UK roads ????

Yes. Saw one (LHD) just before Christmas while on my way into work (to be fair I do travel past the Honda factory!) Looked ok, didn't really stand out IMO.

I don't really get why they're seemingly trying to make it average looking. Surely it should be bonkers, the competition will be. With this being their foray into turbocharging it ought to be a revelation, but it looks a bit insipid.

It could be a "hash" job, with standard and Type-r parts mixed in. I will wait to see what the end result looks like, as it could well be similar to concept

I doubt Mclaren will want to go near a bog standard road car.

As for the rear devil horn wing, there's talk that it doesn't pass EU Homologation, (homo in there somewhere at least), also talk that it could be kept for the ring beater version, and then possibly a sub version with the basic wing in the pics.

Another rumour is, that devil horn wing could be applied after purchase, because of the homologation issue, but surely it's how it drives that counts??

The test mules have been sporting that exact same spoiler since before the concepts showed up. Having this spoiler does not mean the production version will not get it, it's the same mule(s) we've been seeing for an eternity.

If we are going to take these photos as proof of what the production version will look like then it will be released with a roof rack rail with lights attached...

I wouldn't say guaranteed, has there been any F1 team hatchbacks since the Williams Clio? I would guess a McClaren fettled NSX would be more likely what with McClarens past work with Mercedes. That'd be pretty cool.

At what size does a wing become homosexual?

If this Prius knock off is what becomes of the Honda Type R, then only the real Honda fanatics will be interested.

The original concept would have stolen many a Focus RS, Renaultsport, Subaru customers. This design much less so.
