BMW M3 evolution: Pic Of The Week

BMW goodness for your desktop; hopefully M's new boss downloads it for his computer too

PHers love an M car but given the reception for new boss of the tuning division Franciscus van Meel he's going to have to work a little harder to feel that affection personally. OK, so he's still new to the job and we interviewed him on the launch event for the X6 M so we'll forgive him for toeing the company line on four-wheel drive. But with his Audi history and apparent enthusiasm for traction uber alles talk of four-wheel drive M cars, hybrids and the death of manual M cars unsurprisingly met with a frosty response on these pages.

We're here to help though and with this week's desktop image available to download hopefully van Meel can add it to his own homescreen to remind him of the kind of stuff M fans really hold dear.

Traditional (4:3)
Computer widescreen (16:10)
TV widescreen (16:9)
Portrait (smartphone, etc)

Mmm the E46 M3 is just the best looking BMW ever.
With my wheels and from very far away I like to pretend I have one hehe

Who will be the first to mention it's an M4, not an M3!

It's a very good looking car, perhaps only diminished in recent years by ubiquity, but the E30 M3 still trumps it in the looks department for me

It is a very clean, classic (but timeless) and well-resolved design.

Agreed, and the Sport Evo at the front is out of kilter with the other standard M3s behind

Nice pic, would be better if it was in order, and a different coloured E90.

There are another pictures with them in the correct order.

Here is one.

Edit:

I'm probably a little biased as to which is the best

A slightly more extreme line-up of M3s (that exact same Sport Evo though):

The one at the end was the E90 CRT btw. And there were about 50 CSLs behind me at the time of that pic too

In chronological order they get more and more generic and Euro trashy every time a newer model comes out looks wise. With the possible exception of the E46, that still looks pretty sharp. Imo,anyway.
