£100K Garage: James Hurford

A classic Mustang, Mini and Escort is just half the story in James's selection

Name: James Hurford
Previously owned: Citroen AX, Vauxhall Cavalier, Skoda Octavia vRS, Subaru Legacy , BMW E90 3 Series (company car) Ford Mondeo (company car) and VW Golf estate (company car).
Currently owned: BMW E60 530d Touring, Mazda Eunos roadster
On the shortlist: "I wanted a Ferrari but I changed my mind due to the increase in prices which wouldn't let me scratch any other itches. After careful reconsideration this list is my 'car itch scratching post except for a Ferrari'. Snappy title!"

Ford Escort RS2000
Cost:
£28,500
Balance: £71,500
Why I chose it: "When I was a young lad my Dad's cousin had a black RS2000. He was also a police trained driver. When he took me out for few fun runs around south Bristol it certainly made an impression! I know they aren't that fast but it's the looks that do it for me. That droop snoot is gloriously ugly, and the lurid green is fantastic."

MK Indy
Cost:
£9,995
Balance: £61,505
Why I chose it: "This looks sufficiently mental to keep me interested for a while! I would plan to do sprints, track days and some circuit racing in this."

Mini Cooper
Cost:
£3,750
Balance: £57,755
Why I chose it: "I have always wanted one of these. I have never even driven one which needs to be addressed, self preservation society and all that malarky."

Ford Mustang
Cost:
£22,990
Balance: £34,765
Why I chose it: "I love American muscle cars from the late 60s. Lazy V8s, appalling suspension and brakes but looks to die for and very cool to my probably misguided eyes. I don't like "Eleanor" and prefer the look of the Bullitt Mustang but as these would blow the budget this early one looks like a beauty. I particularly like the fact it is black and not massively modified."

TVR Cerbera
Cost:
£15,890
Balance: £18,905
Why I chose it: "I love the looks of these cars they are my favourite of the TVR stable. AJP8 is a must and the Top Gear drag race from eons ago cemented my feelings for this particular model."

VW Transporter Camper
Cost:
£9,500
Balance: £9,405
Why I chose it: "I don't really like any other camper vans and I would need this for two things: family camping trips (adding brownie points) and as a tow car for the MK Indy to weekend events (reducing brownie points)."

ECO Trailer velocity
Cost:
£6,600
Balance: £2,805
Why I chose it: "Transport for the MK Indy and a pit base in conjunction with the VW. I chose this one because it is black which I like and there is something I find pleasing about the shape. It looks brooding, like it contains something evil.

"The remaining cash would be for some driver training which I would need to get the best out of the Indy!"

Loving that RS2000 (price excepted) until I saw it had a Zetec engine conversion. Would have thought originality ruled for something like that, but perhaps that would have made it even more expensive.

Good choice of cars there. Note I said cars, not vans.

That Mustang is stunning. That and the Escort and Cooper resonate with me.

That MK, what's the front numberplate attached to? And what is it with kit car builders that they fit parts that don't fit, so then chop the bonnet randomly, or put an off centre hump in for clearance.

I was going to suggest a proper Caterham might be a better choice that a kit car lookalike.

Then I read the MK advert!!!

I love that Escort, but the Cerbera is the one for me. Nothing TVR ever made looks as good as a yellow Cerbera.

Some really novel choices.

Who could resist a van with "It has a rock 'n' roll bed with two seatbelt points".

If you have to have a van the transporter is much like driving a golf and if you ask the RAC (with experience) almost impossible to get into.

Not certain about spending that much on a trailer.

The MK looks like fun and must have the longest spec list of any car in any 100k garage.

Must be the first original Mini and what a great example. That song becomes an earn worm everytime.

Interesting and very personal choices.

I had a 65 Mustang back in the 90's with the same body style. It was and looked like a daily driver with some obvious bondo on it. It had an automatic and was a 6 cylinder. I think there was one engine with less power, but it was basically the least impressive Mustang at the time it was sold. People loved that car. While my 80's Esprit gets quite a lot of attention, it is far less than the Mustang received.

The Cerbera is one of the very few cars I would consider over my Esprit. I love the looks of them, especially the single headlight ones like the one here. Once a car is 25 years old, there are ways to get them to the USA. I suspect I'll be considering a Cerbera when that happens. I do wish there were more LHD ones, though.

All for the Sag and the Cerb, but that pictured TVR might stand for a lot with it's spec list, but it isn't a looker.

Apparently the MK has a quife diff. Oooo er! Mind you, it probably would make Mrs Pigeonskirt quife under WOT.

thanks for the comments,

I know very little about vans that one seemed the best for the money I assigned in the budget. A caterham would have meant a compromise elsewhere and that mk indy looks like it has had more work done that the price asked. I wasn't particularly bothered about the escort not having the original essex (i think !) engine from the advert it looks like some good work has gone in though I would probably take a more knowledgeable person with me if is was real cash I was spending

The trailer appeals because it has a hint of darth vader about it, brooding, plus I would hope for that price the quality would be good.
