Curious to see how that roof works. Looks like the a standard boxster roof with two additional flaps?

Röhrl commented that the facelift cars sound like VW beetles and ordered one of these so we know it's not a turbo. smile

I think we'd all love to see one, but that car appears to have a Spyder roof on top of a normal bolster roof. Could this not simply be camouflaging some subtle change to the roof mechanism?

Hard to tell from the pictures.

I think the humps are separate from the rear trunk lid, the roof is based on the regular Boxster roof and the humps move out of the way while the roof folds down below them in 991 Targa fashion.
Could be mechanical to save weight but since the biggest compliant was the "fussy roof" it's probably electrical.

Not sure what the two rear straps would be for... my best guess is that the car with a regular Boxster roof and humps would just look silly without the straps to balance the look out.

pictures for reference - humps would cover the area above the folded down roof:

and the humps (not the whole rear lid) would move out of the way like this while the regular Boxster roof is in operation:

Pros: typical "Boxster Spyder look", quick and easy operation, no speed limit with the roof on, 100% leak proof
Cons: ruins the whole point of the concept: saving weight

I think weight will be the key. ~1250kg with a 3.4L 350hp engine would make this a VERY interesting alternative to the GT4.

Latest rumors suggest a 340 PS 3.4L engine from the Cayman GTS, manual or PDK.

Makes sense to me if the car is considerably lighter than the GT4.
It also lets them please the PDK-only crowd this season without cutting into C2S-number territory like a 3.8L PDK would.

They also found a picture of the tyre which shows 265 width. Porsche doesn't allow more than ~330 hp with a 265 tyre, so it's doubtful that it will have the 3.8L engine. On the other hand this means that it'll very likely be a lot lighter than the GT4.

Without having driven the cars I can see how a 1250kg Spyder with a "revy" 3.4L putting out 340 PS could be more fun than a 1340kg GT4 with a "torquey" 3.8L putting out 385 PS. The GT4 would be the faster car of course but that's not really the point with these cars.

^^^ if you zoom in on the last picture in the posting above you can make out 235/xx/R20. 235 R20 front, 265 R20 rear.

My guess is still the Cayman GTS engine +-10 PS + tweaked X73 + larger brakes + LSD. Basically a car that slots in between the GTS and GT4. Weight and cost will make or break it for me.

I may be wrong but i think the GT4, 991 RS and 918 Spyder all have 265 tyres.

I'd have the power roof on a standard gorgeous 981 any day.

Grab the sunshine while you can - and don't get wet if it doesn't last.
