Last Bugatti Veyron sold

'La Finale' has found a customer and will be on show at Geneva - is that really it?

After a decade in production, the 450th and final Bugatti Veyron has been sold. It is the Grand Sport Vitesse "La Finale", seemingly another demure Bugatti one-off.

To be shown in full at Geneva...
To be shown in full at Geneva...
The La Finale will be on display at Geneva alongside chassis #1, the first Veyron produced back in 2005. Since then we've had the Super Sport Coupe, Grand Sport Roadster and Grand Sport Vitesse Roadster. There have of course been those infamous special editions too, which we will not attempt to recount here. What will motor shows be without another one-off Veyron?

The four original development goals for the Veyron are still fairly incredible today. It was to transfer more than 1,000hp to the road (the actual power figure is 1,001hp), reach a top speed of over 400kph (248mph), accelerate to 62mph in less than three seconds and still be suitable "for driving to the opera in comfort and style." While the hybrid hypercars may have stolen some thunder from it recently but the Veyron's technical achievement remains pretty bonkers.

"An unprecedented chapter in automobile history has reached its climax", modestly claims Bugatti President Wolfgang Durheimer. A price hasn't been announced for the La Finale, but consider this has some kind of indicator: the average price of recent sold Veyrons is 2.3 million euros. Lordy.

Rumour mill says a lighter version, more carbon fibre, with 1500bhp.

Adding new meaning to the term, mental exercise. The end of the Veyron means the beginning of something else. Possibly.

I know the Veyron has always divided opinion but honestly it would still be high up in my dream garage. Just for she sheer lunacy of a car with that engine and that power, all tamed into nothing any harder to drive than a Golf.

Would love to know what flat out acceleration in a Veyron feels like. Doubt I'll ever know I suppose.

There's a ride at Alton Towers with the same 0-60. Feels quick.

I remember well the time when many top motoring journalists spoke of the McLaren F1 and confidently predicted that its top speed would never be surpassed.

I have always struggled with the looks - the grille to me has always jarred.

I thought the Galabier concept was quite a striking car, but apparently Bugatti's market research demonstrated it wasn't what their clientele wanted.

It will be interesting to see what Bugatti does next.

Is that Rita ?

Yes, that is pretty much the same as a Veyron at 2.5 seconds, the Super Sport does it in 2.46 but I don't think you could tell the difference biggrin

Its one thing when you aren't in control but must be overwhelming when its up to your right foot, wonder if you get used to that kind or thrust and want more ? every speed limit in the country despatched in under 3 secs.

However, there is something I don't really like about the Veyron, its a bit like a motorised Faberge Egg, its a bit chintzy and some of the colour combinations are horrendous.

I wonder if at the end of its life they made any money on them after development costs - they didn't to begin with ?

Servicing cost is eye watering from what I recall? Tyres and wheels, at least.

you could always try a superbike for the 0-60 (which are all around the 3 second mark), superb and mad car all rolled into one.

Ugly, yes. You can get them in carbon fiber though.

Its different sensations though. On a superbike you are leant forward, and your arse is slung against the seat hump, theres the scream of the engine, the roar of the wind

In a car, your whole upper torso is squished against the back of the seat, you feel everything is trying to remain where it was, while the car tries to take you to where it is. It's a really different set of sensations I find

Flanders.

The McLaren is still a better looking car, and at least for my money, a way better engineered product. VW just wanted stupidly big numbers, and they got it. Gordon Murray wanted something lightweight, which is still the best way to make a car go fast. The Bug is fundamentally flawed and butt ugly. The McLaren less flawed, and has a considerably more timeless design (doesn't look anything like a dated as the bug).

And more importantly for me, the McLaren being a 3 seater means that I could have both of my sons in the car with me .... Gordon was thinking of divorced dreaming single dads with 2 sons all along ... wink

I have been on it and yes it does feel quick. I'd just love to know what it feels like on the road, that's all smile I love the noise of the Veyron engine too with the guttural snarling and the whining turbo's so to hear it in the car would just be awesome.

Maybe a Veyron will show up in Sporting Bears at the NEC one year.
