RE: Mercedes - Geneva 2015
Wednesday 4th March 2015
The Maybach Pullman is not the most PHey of cars at Geneva but it's impossible to ignore. Mainly that's due to the size - it's 6.5m long and 100mm taller than an S-Class - but also the incredible, magnificent luxury. Four people reside in the rear, sitting face-to-face with an electric partition window, calf supports on their reclining seats and an extra cushion on each headrest. Annoyingly (yet understandably) the queue to just take five minutes in the back of a Maybach was a bit too long. There was an AMG GT3 to look at after all...
Mercedes - Geneva 2015
From Maybach Pullman to AMG GT3 via G-Class squared there's enough to be excited by at Mercedes
Even with the R8 LMS a short distance away, the impact of the GT3 is not dulled one little bit. It's quite small as GT3 cars go (remember this will race against GT-Rs and Bentley Continentals) but the aggression is off the scale. The dive planes look like they could be used as guillotines, the spoiler is enough to make a GT3 RS look meek and it has side-exit exhausts. Anything with side-exit exhausts is cool.
And a trip to Mercedes at Geneva would not have been complete without a look at the G500 4x4 squared. What a wonderfully daft creation! Again it was a car many were flocking over, the 450mm ground clearance, 22-inch wheels and side-exit exhausts (more cool points) making it really imposing. Even more than a 'normal' G-Class. Plus it was diverting attention from the GLE, which has to be a good thing.

The crème de la crème of the Silver Star range, His Excellency Field Marshall Dr. Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Dada - as it's known in full, at least with the 12-cylinder engine - is...well, it's enormous.
High-end options include full armor and noise-blocking, bullet-proof windows.

I was concerned that with the new Maybach being more closely based on the handsome S class, the core brand value of being ludicrously ugly and vulgar might have been lost; but no, Mercedes have done their millionaire clients proud, producing an over-inflated parody of the regular car's taut lines, neatly adding weaker-offset wheels to round off the over-bodied, over-blown, over-weight impression. Well done!
I honestly found the previous Maybachs to be less vulgar that the three-tonne brick that is the Phantom. At least the Maybach had curves. Granted, both designs have dated, considerably.
This is doing it properly:
In any case, that AMG GT3 is a fantastic-looking thing! I'll certainly be rooting for the Silver Arrows if I could ever find GT3 coverage in the 'States.
