DeLorean DMC-12: Time For Tea?

Take a break from Geneva with a great Petrolicious film on the DeLorean

Gullwing doors are always good for motor shows. See the Quant F and Radical RXC at Geneva this year. If you want attention on a show stand or on the public road or anywhere in fact, gullwing guarantees results.

Aside from the obvious Mercedes-Benzes, it's impossible to discuss gullwing doors without thinking of the DeLorean DMC-12. Of course there's so much more do talk about with the car, as this Petrolicious video does, but the doors remain a star attraction.

Geoff Ombao is the owner of this DeLorean and, predictably enough, fell in love with the car as a child. His neighbour owned one, and apparently "every time he drove by, it was like watching Santa Claus driving the ice cream truck."

The car also inspired Geoff to pursue a career dream but we'll let him explain that. And don't worry, there's plenty on John DeLorean too.

Watch it here.

Back to the Future (1985) film? Blimey, that was three decades ago!

DeLorean DMC-12. Still awesome, 30 years on?

One of Giorgetto Giugiaro's (Italdesign) best designs, shame about the engine...they'd have put an Alfa V6 in there... wink

Someone where I work owns one, although it seems it's very rarely actually on the road. Lovely looking thing. smile

Currently restoring one. I doubt it'll lose any real value from here on in. Fantastic car and community attached to it.

Would love to own a Delorean! For me its up in my top 10 cars to own in a lifetime. Rebuilt car with the stage 2 motor upgrade would be perfect.

Still remember that great scene from Back To The Future...

Doc are you telling me you built a time machine out of a Delorean!

Well I figured if you're going to build a time machine into a car then why not do it with some style!

These are right at the top of my favourite cars list. Love the looks of them and I also admire the story behind how they got built. The whole drugs bust thing just makes them even more interesting. Never heard the part about his family's lives got threatened though.

I'd love to own one but their prices have been steadily increasing over the past 10 years, so the longer I leave it, the more expensive they're going to become.

Just finished reading The Delorean Story, which provides an insight into the man behind the badge. Not brilliantly written, but full of interesting stuff. I've loved these since I was first made aware of them in BTTF. I'd have been 6. A few years ago I revised my 40th birthday present car from an F355 to one of these. It will happen.

I can honestly say that of all the cars I have worked on, regraining a De Lorean is one of the most fun, pleasing and rewarding jobs I do.

In real terms, that's not really true. They were for years, all £20k cars. If you spent £10k, you'd spend that again making it "right" or "showroom" or whatever the hell you wanted. smile

Now, they're edging towards £30k cars (advertised). With inflation, it's about the same day-to-day and I'd be very surprised if that really changes a great deal. Certainly with the BTTF 30 year anniversary, they are being asked more of.. but what money changes hands is anyone's guess. I know of a few that have fetched crazy, 355/993 money but you pays your money and all that.

Personally I see mine as an investment, but not one I'll retire on. I'll make whatever £30k is in today's money and the next keeper will likely do the same. For now, mine's a keeper anyway. Don't be afraid to import from the US.

Importing one from the US is the plan once I have the money. Want to make a road trip out of it and drive it all the way to the docks, once I've found one I like.

No reason why not; though you will have to have booked and planned the whole piece before attempting it. I used transport @ $1500 insured door to door, so it was easier. That was this car; the previous D I flew to Ohio and test drove it first (it wasn't a project though). Fun stuff if you have the time to burn and risk on it!

I think that's realistic. In the early days they were selling for about £12,000 and have broadly moved along in line with inflation.

Definitely live in the category of "interesting" cars. I understand some parts availability can be a challenge - body and trim rather than the French-ish oily bits.

The Low Volume Vehicle Manufacturing Act in the USA was passed in 2015, meaning DMC will be producing new DeLoreans inn Texas using new old stock of parts shipped over from Northern Ireland. So you will be able to buy a brand new Delorean. An EV version is planned.
