Porsche 968 Club Sport: Spotted
When Club Sport cost less than a regular model! How things have changed...
Riviera Blue though? We had to. It's a great colour, one inextricably linked to that 911 GT3 and always very rare too. Funnily enough it doesn't look that brilliant on a 968 to these eyes but, hey, it's a discussion point.
The Club Sport shouldn't need much introduction here. Launched as an attempt to rouse interest in the 968, a drastic range of weight saving measures was implemented: out with the rear seats, air-con, electric windows, stereo, power seats and even the airbag. Depending on where you read, anything between 50 and 100kg was saved over a regular 968.
The weight loss combined with tweaks to the suspension created another inspirational Club Sport Porsche, one journalists couldn't praise highly enough. And yet, despite a price tag £5K less than a regular 968, it didn't prove hugely popular with customers.
Those that are available appear to have enjoyed a nice value increase recently. Certainly it was a surprise to see this car at £28,750. Yes the mileage is low but, having not checked on 968s for a while, that seems quite a lot. Still, given the values of a contemporary 911 it doesn't look terrible.
And perhaps that's the way to look at this particular 968 Club Sport. It's been prepped even further for the track so it would seem rude not to enjoy the car where it performs best. Given current Porsche values it doesn't stand to lose a lot, if anything. Of course £30K is not an insignificant amount should the worst happen but this plain old 993 Carrera is nearly 50 per cent more expensive. For a car that won't be as capable down a B-road or on a track.
Many people have spoken recently about the danger of using what are becoming increasingly valuable RS Porsches. They are still fantastic things to use but are being safeguarded as investments with the incredible spike in values. Could the 968 Club Sport be the last Porsche special that could still be bought to enjoy? One to ponder.
Finally, if the Club Sport is a little too intense (or expensive), don't forget the UK-only 968 Sport. Built on the same production line as the CS but with much of the regular 968's equipment chucked back in, it should still provide much that's adored about the Club Sport on a more modest budget. This £12K 968 Sport is modified but has all the OEM parts still available. Only the very well off can make a Porsche track project from a 911 now (unless it's a 996), so is the 968 the next best alternative?

Yet you can still get a decent 944 S2 for 5 grand, anything Porsche ever do with RS or CS on and painted in a primary colour is guaranteed to go daft.
maybe it isnt that these are expensive, they are pretty good (only driven a normal 968 which was a very similar drive to an S2) maybe its just the rest are still conspicuous bargains ?
Never worth that, the seller is a dreamer. As mentioned above, I don't think he wants to sell it. Regardless, it would be a foolish buy IMO. £28k would get you a far more interesting car/marque on the drive. I don't care if "those that know, know". It looks like an elderly low-spec (i.e. not a 911) Porsche which, in that colour, has had the Max Power treatment. For similar money you could be in (for example) a DB9 or a much newer, much nicer 911 Turbo.
Easy to forget how little power 968s had, relatively, in comparison to today's motors, or even contemporary fast cars like an Evo II.
If you'd asked me before the article went up I'd have said the 968 must've had something approaching 300hp but it seems that kind of output was reserved for the Turbo S.
*Looks at 350hp hatchbacks*
Anyone investing in an unadulterated Porsche 968 CS isn't doing anything foolish.
Once offered as a stripped-down version of the basic 968 (with a 17 per cent discount!), the Porsche 968 Club Sport is today the more valuable of the two, and a real investment opportunity.

Advertised at 2/3rds of the price of the one above, and the ad doesn't say how much it actually went for. Plus coming from a dealer you would expect it to be absolutely tip-top, unmolested, not resprayed, warranted, freshly serviced and MOT'd etc, and a small hand job from the dealer's secretary/Mrs/cleaner.
