£100K Garage: Russell Attwood

A glut of Hondas for JDM fan Russell, plus a trio of interesting BMWs to balance them out

Name: Russell Attwood
Previously owned: Toyota Yaris
Currently owned: Toyota Yaris
On the shortlist: "Honda NSX Type R, Honda Integra DC2 Type R, Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, BMW 750i, Mercedes 280SE Convertible... I'm 19 so that's the reason for having only owned a Yaris, I'm a big JDM fan and love 90s Japanese metal (apart from the interiors)."

Honda Accord Type R
Cost: £3,250
Balance: £96,750
Why I chose it: "An Accord Type R will soon be my next car as they rev high, handle very well for a family saloon (helped by the LSD) and they don't look too OTT. They are also a lot cheaper to insure than a Civic Type R. I chose this one as it has had some fairly tasteful mods apart from the replica alloys." [Russell's original choice had sold so this Accord had to fill in].

Honda Integra DC5 Type R
Cost: £9,270
Balance: £87,480
Why I chose it: "I chose an Integra as it is most probably the best handling front wheel-drive road car produced. It has the six-speed gearbox instead of the five-speed in the DC2 and the K20 engine too which is very easy to modify. I think they also look a lot better than the DC2. Plus, of course, it revs crazily - VTEC yo! This one is a nice, standard low mileage car which are becoming hard to find. But I want to modify it and keep it for weekend blasts!"

Honda Civic EK9 Type R
Cost:
£8,485
Balance: £78,995
Why I chose it: "The EK9 was the first Civic Type R and arguably the most hardcore. That famous vid of an EK9 versus a Ferrari F355 adds to the EK9 legend and ever since I saw the clip I have wanted an EK9. I would turn into a track car, fit it with a roll cage and harnesses and hoon about on track making the most of that B16 engine. I chose this one over the limited other options as it is very stock compared to most, they are also starting to creep up in price and are becoming increasingly sought after."

Alpina D3 Estate
Cost:
£17,995
Balance: £61,000
Why I chose it: "If I'm tracking the EK9 I'm going to need something to pull it and do serious motorway miles. The D3 is understated but faster than it looks, plus I haven't seen any bad reviews of it. I opted for the estate so i could chuck the mountain bike in the back if i needed to. There are only two in the classifieds and this one has a higher mileage but a much nicer interior." [Again another sold car but this one should fill in just fine].

Nissan Pulsar GTI-R
Cost: £6,995
Balance: £54,005
Why I chose it: "I know it's a slightly oddball car and not the prettiest but I love it for the fact it's a Nissan Sunny apparently fed a pure protein diet and pumped with 300hp and 4WD. Sounds cool to me! Plus I think it would be excellent in the snow and general bad weather us Brits have. Only one in the classifieds so no other option really, shame about the alloys and unknown mods." [That only one in the classifieds has gone but there is this one now available].

Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R
Cost:
£13,995
Balance: £40,010
Why I chose it: "Everyone who loves JDM cars loves the Skyline GT-R; the R32 is my favorite, as the R33 is too curvy for me and the R34 too muscular. The R32 looks so lean and agile and with the infamous RB26 at its heart, the R32 is one of the best Japanese cars ever made in my opinion. This one is in great condition but I would like to add a few tasteful mods and get the power up to about 400hp."

BMW 630i Convertible
Cost: £15,995
Balance: £24,015
Why I chose it: "Something for the occasional hot summer's day when you want to cruise around with the top down and some mates. I chose the Six for its usable seats and this one has a nice spec with the alloys and colour. With the 3.0-litre six it would be perfect for summer cruising."

BMW 850 CSi
Cost: £16,500
Balance: £7,515
Why I chose it: "I have always thought the 8 Series to be one of the best looking Beemers and the ultimate iteration of the shark nose. It just looks like its going to knock your teeth out if you look at it funny and of course the 850 CSi has the beautiful V12 and a manual gearbox. Perfect! This is the only one on PH, they are very rare cars.

"That leaves me a good remainder for fuel and parts for the Hondas. I think it's a good mix of metal for my perfect £100K garage!"

I can fully appreciate this garage. It isn't 'too' sensible, it's more just building a collection of cars that you like, fair play.

By the 3rd Honda I was starting to lose interest... Brought it back a bit with the Nissans and I can see this is about a collection of cars you aspire to own but just different tastes to mine.

Just coming back to this, the EK9 Civic - thats a new one to me. Is this the video of the Civic V's F355 that is mentioned in the article?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaCMRUntng0

Is that for real?! Something doesnt seem 100% right.. Its either genuinely bloody well set up and defies the laws of physics, or someone has 'upped the frame rate' slightly.

If its real... I want one too!

i hope you got a big enough garage! Jaysus

I don't get it. too many cars, similar is most respects & very specific ones for weather. Maybe if you lived in the Nordics it might make sense wink

If these are the cars you like, then it's a great collection. I really like the 850CSi and the R32 GTR, and given the price rise of many other modern classics of late, both seem to represent excellent value.

Definately sped up. Actually youtube framerate is fixed to common values like 30fps. With fast forwarding within this 30fps output limit, you need to actually drop some of the original frames to move the scene further within given time. That's why the movement on the clip seems so disjointed and unnatural. Also with the best will in the world I can't tell what car is actually chasing him from this view. Only thing that strikes me is Civic's excessive understeer in some corners. If that's really the video that genuinely made Russell or someone else to want the EK9, it must have been strong wishful thinking to not see trough this joke:-)

Excellnt choice of cars sir. I have had most of the fast hondas you talk about and am a big BMW fan aand now own an M3. You would not be sorry with any of those choices I can assure you!

As soon as you can afford a Honda type R (EK9 or Dc2) make sure you get one, Honda is for life not just for christmas!

Those EK9 Type-Rs just look better and better. Of all the "proper" hot hatches (front-drive, naturally aspirated, lightweight) I think they're the one I'd most like to own one day, along with a 1.9 205 GTI.

This is a very interesting selection, and the Pulsar is another interesting choice. I've never seen a comparison between one of these and the equivalent Starlet Turbo/Glanza but I'm sure there's a Best Motoring vid out there somewhere for me to watch when I get home smile

Despite it's size, the Pulsar GTI-R is comparable to (and rallied against) the Impreza, EVO, Escort Cosworth, Celica GT4, Intergrale, etc

This probably would have been my garage if I were 19.

I don't think the reasoning behind the cars is all there but I wont be dick, certainly one of the better £100k garages IMO.

Sounds like a bit of an unsung hero. I have looked at them in the past and seen some crazy dyno charts for such a little car.
