Volvo 850 T-5R: Spotted

The fast estate is making a comeback; no further excuse needed to go T5 hunting!

The topic has already been discussed at length on PH, but let it just be stated again how much we enjoy a fast estate. To therefore see the market bolstered by a wealth of recent new arrivals is very pleasing, from SEAT Leon Cupra to Jaguar XFR-S and many more in between.

Estate done the 20th century way

There's even a proper fast Volvo wagon to be excited about again. Many will observe (some already have) that the V60 Polestar's £50K asking price is quite steep in the face of German opposition. It's worth remembering how much the Volvo's standard equipment would cost on those, but also how thoroughly engineered and, well, expensive it feels to drive too. You sense a lot of people have spent a lot of time working on the dampers, the brakes and the steering. There are already ex-demos for sale at £10K off that list price too...

Anyway, having been won over by James's V60 after a few journeys, the hunt was on for a V70 or 850 from the classifieds to feature. And what a specimen we have!

Typically a fast 850 will feature as Shed because, well, they're quite old now and not particularly desirable to many. This car is different though. It's a T-5R rather than a regular T-5, a limited edition car that paved the way for the 850R. And it's yellow.

There's a sports exhaust to help this out too

Power was up from the regular T5 and the suspension was upgraded further still with new dampers and anti-roll bars to improve the dynamics. More than two decades after the T-5R's launch, in a front-wheel drive world of VAQ, Revoknuckles and Perfohubs, its handling probably won't be incredible but that's sort of missing the point. Fast Volvos are about going very fast, making a great noise and carrying lots of stuff. Well, unless you give it to TWR to run on racetracks...

Furthermore, the appeal of a T-5R is now further heightened by their incredible rarity. Never exactly numerous, Howmanyleft has a paltry 19 manuals left registered in the UK. Alright, so it's hardly ever going to be a collectors' item but an 850 T-5R will remain cool to a select few (hopefully a lot of them on here) for a good while yet.

Would you pay £5K for one though? The spec of this one is perfect as a yellow manual, the service history is comprehensive and there's a warranty with it too. But then it still remains a 20 year-old Volvo estate with 169,000 recorded miles. Let's hope someone can justify it and continue to enjoy a fantastically cool slice of fast estate history.

Brilliantly fun comfy cars, I drove a few when new. Better than the later V70s as the 850 felt more solid & dependable as well as looking more like a Volvo should.

I've got an old mag somewhere that road tests one of these with a comment about putting a grandfather clock in the back & heading out to test time dilation laugh

I bloody loved mine, it was fitted with the AP Racing 4 pot brakes as well, though the badly warped discs meant they couldn't be used to their full potential. Many happy memories of chasing much much faster machinery on a PH Hoon and holding it's own to much amusement of myself and my passenger!

Fantastic cars and that's good value. In a few years time, I reckon these will be selling for well over £10k!

You'd have to really want one to spend £5k on a twenty year old 170k mile Volvo estate. Still, I can see how some one would really want one. smile

Great car, I love driving mine, always puts a smile on my face when I get a chance to open up that 2.5 litre 5 cylinder engine.

Awesome cars, but they have always suited the more subtle colours. My dad had a 850 T5 in metallic black/brown, which could go like the proverbial. Still a handsome looking car to this day.

The colour is called Gul Yellow IIRC.

Excellent cars, I had a black estate with the manual gearbox, for around a year, I wish I had never sold it and I WILL own another one someday.

Points of note:

They eat front tyres and traction off of the line is poor, and exceptionally bad in the wet

They seem to eat their front ARB drop links too, these are a cheap and easy item to replace though

The struts that hold the boot lid open on the estate are a weak point - fifty quid to buy and an hourd work to replace

PCV system can clog, if the dipstick smokes badly that's a tell tail sign, inlet manifold off job and the parts are £120 or so, ignoring this can be a bad move - increased crank case pressure can damage a main oil seal and cause a slow, constant weep of oil, gearbox out to fix if thats the case!

O rings in the turbos oil lines can fail, nevet heard of it causing the turbo to br starved of oil though, easy job to do, half an hour tops and they are dirt cheap to buy

Auto boxes, Volvo said they were "sealed for life" transmissions, they aren't!! Good clean fluid is a must, always budget for this if buying an auto if you aren't 100% certain it hasn't been done recently

Bomb proof cars, don't let the above list worry you.... They are fast, stealthy and uber spacious, I loved mine.

Drove these on a regular basis when they were the second batch of armed response vehicles in Merseyside.
Unbelievable acceleration once you managed traction with a full payload in the rear.
They were so reliable that Volvo gave the force a 200,000 mile warranty on the engines.

How many manufacturers would do that now?????

Yup, it's Gul Yellow, used by Volvo as a safety measure to make the car more visible. That just makes it even more legendary.
Gul is yellow in Swedish.
