Its time to address the hundreds of tiny stone chips in my 996 front bumper.

As its a common refurb on most cars there must be many folk in and around Herts who have had this work done.

Could you please give your recommendations and the price that you actually paid for the work?

I have had some highly speculative quotes whenever the word Porsche is mentioned!

I really dont care if its a Porsche specialist, all I want is a paint specialist.

Thanks

mr pg

Ashridge Automobiles in Cheddington do a fair few Porsches for Porsche specialist RPM Technic who are located 2 units down on the same industrial park.

If you really want it done properly, you need the front PU, front hood and forward/top part of each front wing doing.

There is a natural blending point on the high part of the front wings behind the front wheels... But this will cost you a fair bit! frown

I had this done by Kieran at Harpenden Classic and Performance. I was recommended to them. They do a lot of Porsche and other similar cars although unit is nothing special.

Really helpful guy and I am delighted with what he did. I was quoted a range between £x and £Y and the final job was somewhere in between. So often you get quoted and the job ends up over budget.

I paid about £235. The job included removal of bumper, take off all parts, plastic weld the previous number plate screw holes, respray and refit.

Finished article is excellent. Good finish and good colour match.

Thanks for all of your helpful links.

I thought I would contact some of them to check if I could take my spare PU along and have it resprayed?

I seemed to have opened a can of worms amongst the paint spraying fraternity. 2 were willing to do this for me and another 2 said that they would have to "blend" the paint over the bonnet and wings (at much greater expense!). The colour is Guards Red.

I am completely at odds with this suggestion since I like to get the PU re-finished every 2 - 3 years. This would result in the bonnet and wings having multiple coats of colour and lacquer overlapping and blended at various points. Imagine what fun someone would have with a paint thickness gauge in this scenario?? eek

I would be very cautious about buying a car where there was evidence of multiple layers of blended paint - perhaps I am being naive?

I fully understand the need to blend paint when a panel repair is done but surely paint matching should be done on the whole bumper and not by "fudging" the match elsewhere?

Views and experiences greatly appreciated, especially if you work in the trade?

My advice is to get the hood front wings done at same time as the blend is important. I bought a car recently that had the bumper done in Guards Red and it is different to the rest of the car. The repaint was done badly and I will have to get the people I use to redo it as i cannot live with the c%&p job they did.

I used Autocraft and wasnt impressed by quality of the job done. Lowish cost but quality not good enough.

I recommended Kieran and would again - he is busy, though. A good sign.

I have used Pete at Langley Autocraft - did a full respray on my GT3 and was a very good job. JZM use them and they don't scrimp on suppliers.

Finally got round to having my stone chips resprayed on 2 bonnets and 2 PUs (I have a spare set)

I have to say the service provided by Kieran and his guys at the Harpenden paint-shop was excellent. yes Thanks to those who recommended him.

Following a visit in the car so Kieran could check the overall paint condition and colour, I removed the bonnet and PU so they could be prepared and sprayed off the car. The PU needed to come off anyway so I could properly clean the rads and freshen up the black mesh grilles.

Perfect colour match and preparation with heavy top lacquer polished to a flat glass like sparkle. I will not divulge the total price but will say that it was competitive for such quality work.

Its such a shame that it will all get stone chipped once again. No point owning it if its not used I guess! driving
