So.... I have just had the call from Project Nine, who were inspecting the Cayman S I was planning to buy. And in the Boroscope they have indicated it has very light scoring, but overall they say the enginer is very good, car has good history, no other issues. Car is very solid, good example. Is it an instant walk away? Or I am going to end up in the position where if I end up in the position where I end up spending an epic amount on inspections only to find the same result with all, and be gutted I let this one go. Its a private sale so no real come back..... Any ideas?

It currently is using no oil whatsoever currently, done, 49,000 miles in 9 years, I would probably be doing 6-7000 miles a year, so it could be years until it really needs work? Argghh! I was so hoping for a total clean bill of health!

Not sure this will exist

Surely op should use this as an opportunity to negotiate the price to pay for at least 50% of a Hartech rebuild? especially if everything else about the car is good.

Im not sure that anyone on here can evaluate 'light scoring' because there is no context. Someone who has real knowledge of what a 'normal' bore looks like for a car of this age mileage would need to offer guidance and so isn't this what the garage you have paid to do the boroscope should be doing. What is their view, do they say its junk or would they buy it if it were their own money?

I do wonder that, am I just going to be going around in circles, the more you dig the more problems you will find. I am not totally risk adverse, just don't want to end up with a total duffer either!

Hartech Rebuilds run into a lot of big numbers don't they?

When I wrote it I was in a bit of a fluff about what do to do. A printed report came back as such

RADIATOR COOLANT TO CROSS PIPES CORRODING
SLIGHT SWEAT FROM B2 CAM SOLENOID
CYLINDERS 1,2,4 & 6 HAVE LIGHT SCORING
CYLINDERS 3 & 5 HAVE SCORING

Which would indicate more of an issue than just "light scoring", I have asked for pictures to see, but thats kinda irrelevant now.

Its just a shame, the car was in fantastic nick, and going to see 2 or 3, deciding that this was the one and investing a bit more time in it, only to come up with the issue I was hoping not to see. But I have decided to walk away, there are more out there, there is even one that has already had a rebuild done by a company called Fearnsport, so I might get in touch there and see what's what.

Its just that overall disappointment, I was hoping to go and pick it up tomorrow, and have a smile ear to ear on my face, now the wait will have to go on, and more awe inspiring drives in my GF's 1.4D Toyota Auris!

Its normally the right hand bank (cylinders 4, 5 and 6) that are affected by serious bore scoring, so in this case, bore # 5 sounds suspect. I would walk away from it.

I had my Cayman S borescoped before I bought it 3 years ago by the head tech at the garage I bought it from. Not exactly independent and I also couldn't be there in person when he did the inspection so I had to go on his word. He told me it had very light scuffing - which some might call scoring - but in his view was entirely normal. I've put around 20k miles on the car, changed oil at 10k intervals, and it has not needed topping up between oil changes. I've read pretty much everything out there on bore scoring and take all the usual recommended precautions in terms of careful warm up, avoiding large throttle/low RPMs and gentle use after sitting stationary with high engine temps.

So my experience of buying a "lightly scored" Cayman has been completely positive and I don't regret buying the car for one moment.

Hi Frank,

Whilst I know it would be the most sensible option within my budget, I have driven both, and the 2.7 is a great car, the S just has the get up and go I want/need. And it must be possible to find a good one.

This is a tricky old subject isn't it, to which I suspect there is no right/wrong. I do kinda feel sorry for the guy selling it too, he was oblivious until I unearthed it for him.

I know. Poor chap (seller). To most buyers and sellers, ignorance is bliss.

I do understand why you'd prefer the extra umph of the 's'....

Good luck with your search. Look forward to seeing your new purchase soon! :-)
