Re-routing the A3 through a tunnel means peace for Hindhead ... above ground at least

At just over a mile long and with an accommodating national speed limit for its length the Hindhead Tunnel provides an irresistable temptation for any PHer possessed of a suitably vocal vehicle and travelling along the A3. And they don't get much more vocal than a Ferrari 599 GTB.

Uploaded by Alex L, what our handheld phone camera clip lacks in production values it more than makes up for in soundtrack. Like any sensible tunnel runner Alex doesn't go piling through the tunnel at a rate of knots - it'd all be over too soon if he did. Nope. Slow down, second gear, blast, repeat. Good man!

Fair enough. We had a spare map on the multi-map Syvecs and just did it for a laugh.

The Syvecs has multiple maps selectable by a rotary dial in the cockpit - you don't have to live with it stuck in that map.

The best part of a day out to the Devil's Punchbowl

Last time I got one very loud pop on the overrun that sounded like a gunshot

Can't do it too often or the fun police will be in there with noise meters and GATSOs.

One has to match the charge up with a commensurate slow down because of the speed averaging SPECS cameras at the tunnel.

Or you pick another car to match entering and exiting the tunnel at the cameras.

200bhp air cooled flat four with 48 IDA carbs sounds awesome through the tunnel

That's how we did it. Took the video when heading to the Isle of Wight for the day on site visits a couple of years ago

Just do it sensibly please people. Let's not make a terrible scene and get it reduced to 40/50 like every other A route tunnel in the land.

Slighlty worried about the PH own goal potential on these stories: publicise something great, the masses jump on it, it becomes well known, the blue rinse/Citroen Xsara brigade complain, it gets ruined by over-zealous officials and councillors.
