Not so sure myself. The 2.7 V6 Biturbo audi unit could also be done. I dont like the idea of Turbos (while I love them) in an ultima.... would much rather have a boring predictable torque curve!

Not too hard to run on a suitable aftermarket ECU! (assuming you don't want to run the DCT transmission as well (which will be hard as it's in the wrong end of the car to the engine))

i think its a possible alternative

advantages of turbos is low boost good fuel economy, then high boost use the fuel
light weight
v6 is smaller so more room and possible centre tank
im sure it could be mated to g50 or semi auto box
very tuneable and solid internals
flames out the side on over run......:0)

hahhahahahaha

There have been a could of Pikes Peak cars that have used the R35 engine without the gearbox. These were with aftermarket ECUs. its a non Direct Injection engines so fuel delivery shouldn't be an issue. Cant see it being that hard to get running.

if you google VQ38DETT swap you will see they are starting to get put into other cars, including a Dacia! smile

Until I read your note, this seemed like a project with a complexity just short of cold fusion. The interconnected systems and processors on the GT-R is astounding such that plucking out one piece (the motor) and getting it to work well in isolation would see very tough. But if its been done, I'm impressed.
OTOH, my (mid-range) dream motor is a 997 (or 991) Turbo S motor, or better yet the GT3 motor from the 991. Flat thus a low cg, great sounding and the new GT3 motor red lines at 9K. It will be a while before those motors appear in isolation and the price will be brutal. But, one can hope.

Don't know the dimensions but being flat I would imagine it to be way too wide.

Two words for you: Crank Seals. smile

The VQ38 is a much stronger engine that has been taken to pretty high limits on the stock blocks (with forged internals). With after market liners these things are reputed to be pushing OVER 2000bhp (see AMS Alpha GTRs). Its by no means a plug an play installation, but then neither is any engine other than a AS / AB supplied motor. Not sure how high the VQ can rev but I'm guessing it will be between 8 and 9K rpm no problems. You don't get as nice notice as the flat 6 burble, but V6's can still sound pretty great esp at decent revs.

WOW, just wow. I imagine it might be hard to get it through the noise test of most rack days though! lol

On another note one of the Factory 5 GTM guys has installed a lambo box (Gallardo converted to RWD). They are supposed to be VERY strong (see undergraound racing for examples).

Any engine well tuned with turbos will have a better and more predictable torque curve than the same engine tuned with NA and you can 'tune' the boost and thus power depending upon the throttle position to give better throttle response as well... this is the reason everyone is going turbo now even BMW.
I talk from a position of having done over 500bhp in a SBC Ultima and then over 700bhp in a single turbo Noble of same weight which is much easier to drive hard on road and track... the days of terribly tuned turbo cars are over
