Morgan Aero 8 new details

Fifth-gen Aero 8 shown with the roof off ready for summer (but you can't buy it until autumn)

A flat cap, a V8 Morgan and a country road - looks rather idyllic, doesn't it? These are the first images of the new Aero 8 with the roof down, plus a rendering of the car with the mohair hood up. The car at Geneva was with the hardtop in place, obviously...

Rendering for now, don't expect much change!

Unfortunately the car won't be available to enjoy this summer - production is set to begin in Q4 this year. Morgan says it will continue to update the Aero's development, including progress on that roof, over the coming months. The 19-inch wheels seen on the rendering are confirmed though, the multispoke design inspired by the Aeromax wheel while being lighter and more rigid than that rim.

A return to open top motoring (because driving is far too common a verb) for the flagship Morgan means both the Aero Supersports and Coupe will cease production. A design heavily influenced by those cars, plus the hardtop said to make the Aero a coupe, will have surely played a part too.

The clamshell is a fairly dramatic way of storing the roof, Morgan claiming the view of a long rear deck echos that of a boat while also 'enhancing the sense of adventure and escapism.' There's some luggage space left too, plus more effective air-con, so there's no excuse not to take a weekend in the country.

Morgan says this latest Aero 8 is the most refined Aero product to date, and a wider range of options than ever before will ensure every car is unique. Blue with tan already looks pretty good from here! Expect more from Morgan over the coming months before sales commence, including just what that roof will actually look like.

Wonder if they mocked up the clamshell out of a polishhed ash plank veneer to echo the 50s speed-boats and offer a nod to the Morgan construction techniques at any point in the design process. I'd be curious to see what it would like like as it could either look supperb or utterly dreadful.

Hated the bug-eyed first version of this; but this version is 'grip the desk with your free hand' sexy from every angle. ZMG.

What information I gained from speaking with people when visiting the Morgan Factory Sunday service is the whole range are Marmite cars.

Myself personally understand the image and the appeal of a Morgan and again my personal view is this top of the range new Aero 8 is spectacular.

The second photo gunmetal grey burgundy roof somehow reminds me of a modern version of some 40's-50's American Bat mobile. Or if you can't see this then surely you can see a flair of Wiesmann cars which again can't be a bad thing.

For the lovers of Batman then this can only be a good thingsmile

This Aero 8 defiantly appeals to me and gets a thumbup from me but can't help think the design came somewhere in between the two pics enclosed.

hope it comes with an option on the wheels - radial spokes look wrong in a 1990s audi a4 btcc car sort of way.

I don't like Marmite either. I used to love Morgans (in the days of the Plus 8 etc.). Shame.

Looking at that I get this weird recollection of the Plymouth Prowler.

Thank you. I knew it reminded me of a badly done fake Hot Rod but couldn't remember the Prowler's name.

What a shame that Morgan has lost their way and can't make up their minds what they build these days.

Nice car, but the windscreen surround is clumsy. It would be nicer in alloy rather as the screen on the Jaguar XK150 DHC was so much more elegant than the XK140 DHC version.

You beat me to it biggrin The Thesis was one pig-ugly motor, but this is good use of one of its more delicate design touches.

I guess I'm stuck with liking these tail lights, too.

The silver one looks pretty nice. Styling wise, the rear end has always a bit of a dodgy area for Morgan but this one looks like it might have fixed that. Good luck to one of the last Brit car makers.

Isn't the silver rendering showing side exit exhausts? I wonder if both will be an option or are they saying that the silver car is closer to the final specification? I didn't like it as much as the old car when I saw the Geneva pic's but it looks a lot better in these. Good luck to them
