Volkswagen Golf GTD Estate: Driven

Gran Turismo Diesel makes its first appearance as an estate and it's rather good as well

A Golf diesel estate. "Slow news days lads?" rings out across the land. Get a Focus ST follows soon behind. Of course it's easy to be cynical about yet another sporting VW MQB product, largely because it's hard to keep track. But much like everything else spun off that architecture, there's a predictably high level of talent and sophistication to everything the GTD does.

Coming to an office car park near you soon!
Coming to an office car park near you soon!
GTD to GTD Estate is much like R to R Estate. Same engine, power, transmissions and so on, with a little more weight as the pay off for the additional space. Price is £28,285, or £920 more than the equivalent five-door hatch.

Out on the road in a manual GTD estate and it's initially, well, a little disappointing in fact. For no other reason than we've been spoilt by GTIs with fancy front axles and Rs with unimpeachable traction. The GTD feels a little clumsy, slipping into understeer and wheelspin where they simply wouldn't be an issue in the petrol cars. There's no escaping a heavier engine up front too, the GTD a little less settled over bumps particularly on corner entry and exit. But these are churlish observations really; it is, after all, a Golf diesel estate. That it doesn't corner like a petrol hatch shouldn't come as surprise. Rather it's that those cars have set the dynamic bar so high for quick Golfs that anything that doesn't quite match them seems odd.

Adopt a slightly more relaxed approach and the Golf GTD is a fairly agreeable thing to drive on the incredible roads near Malaga. Yes, the powerband feels pretty narrow and there's more hideous noise fakery in Sport mode but it changes direction smartly, the gearbox is slick and 280lb ft pushes it along just nicely. There's always the sense it could use the VAQ 'diff' to contain that torque but there are precious few other complaints about the drive. It's quite enjoyable in fact.

See, they do still make big, practical estates
See, they do still make big, practical estates
Predictably enough, the familiar Golf traits shine through the rest of the time too. It can while away hours on the motorway with ease, the interior is a model of clarity and, wouldn't you know, it's an estate with genuine load-lugging abilities. In that terrifying place motoring hacks refer to as 'the real world', the Golf GTD Estate would appear to tick many boxes.

There's one missing though. The GTD isn't exactly what could be called great value for money, with that £28,285 starting price. It feels a very high quality and talented car but not quite that much. Here is where it's worth pointing out an Octavia vRS wagon with the same underpinnings and engine is three grand less (£25,170). With the hatch equivalents it's easier to recommend the Golf for the slightly sharper dynamics and sprightlier performance, but they're probably lower priorities with estates. A three-door Golf GTD is much sportier than any Octavia but as estates they're much closer. The Skoda offers more space as well as much of the Golf's ability for considerably less money. It's really quite hard to argue against that.

Boring diesel hatchback is boring but competent shocker.

Why the fk did you even bother with this? Does PH have to generate X amount of new content a week to keep their overlords happy, no matter how pointless it is?

You might aswell compare an Ariel Atom to a Transit van whilst you're at it.

They probably do it just to annoy people like you. It's clearly working smile

Dear PH,
yesterday in the jaguar XE article you told us you wouldn't waste our time reviewing a 180hp diesel.
i am confused.

Not particularly annoyed, just curious why PH seem to want to produce copy that nobody is really interested in reading (just look at how few comments there are on this "review". It's a bit like a fishing magazine reviewing lawnmowers.

Maybe because not everybody can have a fleet of £1000 snotters and wants a car to cover all bases while being mildly amusing?

I also notice a distinct lack of reference to the Seat Leon ST FR, which is a far better car all round, apart from the badge for the 'badge snobs'.
Any reason why? scratchchin

Bored of hearing about MQB platform cars now.

How much of PH is funded by the VAG marketing budget I wonder?

I don't see what is so massively offensive with this article.

If it doesn’t interest you don't have to read it and you don’t have to go to the bother of replying and giving off stink. If the article is pointless what is your comment smile ?

Personally I think it's good to hear PH's opinions on ‘normal’ cars too - as even some ardent PH'ers may need a practical economical load lugger for the daily grind/work and something like this may interest them. They may have this as their sole car, or they may have a fleet of classic Porsches in the garage, not that this should matter.

It interests me as I need an economical estate car. I don’t really want a SUV and stuff like BMW’s and Mercs are more expensive to buy and run and [although this Gold is very pricey I’ll admit] so something like a Golf Estate does appeal to me.

Keep up the good work PH

Is "Gold" a typo or deliberate? - Very appropriate at £28000 for a 2.0 diesel estate

Nothing like a bit of forum debate to keep everybody busy, right?

VW launched the Golf R and GTD Estate with the Alltrack at the same time. We had time in all the cars so there will be stories on all three (it's not over yet). The very first paragraph of this story states that it's not the world's most exciting car and we're not pretending that it is. Furthermore, the review is only just over 500 words which is less than usual for that exact reason; the car isn't massively important but it was deemed interesting enough to warrant a story. Given the popularity of the Golf GTD hatch I don't think that's unreasonable.

On the Jag XE comment, the 180hp diesel is near the bottom of the XE range whereas this is the top of the Golf diesel range. Very different things to compare.

And I had completely forgotten about the Leon, thanks for bringing that up. The Fleet farewell is live today also if you haven't had enough MQB... If you have then we're driving the M135i facelift tomorrow. Remember when that was all the Internet talked about?!

All other criticism, constructive or otherwise, gladly received.

Maybe I'm the only PH reader that has a proper sports car (Caterham in my case) for really fast days, but still want something entertaining, reliable and affordable to run the rest of the time. Currently I've got a Volvo V60 D4 for that role, this Golf would seem a viable option too.

I'm sure a second hand car with a massive thirsty V8 is great if it sits on the drive or in a station carpark all week while you commute on a train, but for those of us that don't have 6 figure fuel bill type salaries and actually use cars every day a quick diesel makes a lot of sense.

I can't really complain as I enjoy the intense coverage of Porsche and BMW models when they come round. But even with my admitted bias, when people moan about those at least they're interesting cars and usually genuinely different to their competitors. I am so, so bored of hearing about another VAG model and how it's actually really very interesting because the 5% of it that's different from its blood brother is actually pretty cool!

I get that these cars are of interest to people who need an interesting work horse but it's like comparing the features of fridge freezers.
