Aston Martin One-77: Spotted

Well if hybrid hypercars don't tickle your fancy...

Isn't it amazing just how quickly the automotive world progresses at times? Back when the Aston Martin One-77 was first shown at the Geneva motor show in 2009 it was advanced and very quick as that breed of car goes: carbon monocoque, inboard adjustable suspension and 760hp saw to that.

Not your conventional Aston interior!
Not your conventional Aston interior!
Only now of course your million pounds or so buys quite a bit more. Or rather it did, until the hybrid hypercar trio sold out. More power than the Aston with less weight and even further advanced dynamics. However, that shouldn't reflect badly on the One-77 as there's a strong case for it being possibly the most desirable of the old breed of hypercars.

See Dan's blog from a little while ago. Cars that captured our imaginations not that long ago can not be replaced because of both customer demand and environmental pressure. Turbos, hybrids and configurable dynamics are the future it would seem, and cars that have just about escaped that are becoming ever more desirable. Modern, advanced and capable but with enough old-fashioned charm to their dynamics and engines to win us over.

The Aston One-77 is arguably the finest (and easily the most expensive) recent representation of this. Want more power from the 5.9-litre V12? Fine, hand it to Cosworth. Capacity was upped to 7.3-litres (ain't no replacement and all that), the compression ratio was upped to 10.9:1 and it was dry-sumped as well to mount it as low and as far back as possible. All this while making it 60kg lighter. The result was 760hp and 553lb ft, plus surely one of the most spectacular noises on four wheels.

Front-mid engined, RWD, V12. Perfect
Front-mid engined, RWD, V12. Perfect
Configurable dynamics? Do it yourself sir. The monotube dampers are adjustable for bump and rebound with further electrically-operated tinkering for ride height and rate change. Of course driver aids are present but they can be turned off as well.

The automated manual will put off some, and it will look like other Astons too much for a few others, but as something to drive it must be magnificent. The kerbweight is only 20kg up on a V12 Vantage and it has another 190hp. Exactly. Crucially, it will be unlike any future Aston flagships. The Vulcan is track only and can you imagine any future 700hp+ Astons using naturally aspirated V12s tuned by Cosworth?

There are in fact two of the 77 One-77s produced for sale on PH at present, this white car chosen because it's one of only nine right-hand drive cars. Pearl Black does look fabulous though... With a £1.2m launch price and barely any miles, where would One-77s be now? Two million? More?

Even the advert here states many are 'being put away in collections to enjoy further appreciation' and a similar fate surely awaits this car. A shame, yes, but not exactly a surprise. Let's hope it gets out on occasion, if only for the noise to be savoured by everyone else around!

Have Aston put some kind of rule gag rule on One-77 owners? I can't find any track performance stats or comparisons? This can only lead me to believe that it's performance is not up the 1.2m price tag?

That sound though! If money was no object, this would be the daily run around.

There really isn't that much out there about these cars, but they look (and sound) just stunning cloud9

I remember Top Gear used a customers car for a magazine article, and from memory they weren't that complimentary about it. Then another customer gave their car to Evo, who seemed to review it in a more positive light.

I've watched this video many, many times!

I was literally looking at these the other day! For me, I would have the white one resprayed black to make the perfect combination of black on red in rhd

Evo drove a Middle Eastern example: http://www.evo.co.uk/features/features/287797/asto...

This isn’t an Aston Martin press car and the company hasn’t helped us to locate a One-77 to test. In fact, the intention was that no media outlet would ever drive a One-77.

I'm intrigued that the Pearl Black one has done a mere 685 miles, yet has been back to the factory 4 times for maintenance...

I love it, just very confused at why there is so little about them from a performance perspective. I seriously wonder if there is some kind of legal issue with anyone testing this against competition. When you buy the car you sign a contract perhaps?

Sounds great in the video and some of the detail is beautiful but it's quite vulgar to look at and the 'boot space' makes a Caterham look practical! smile

Just wish Aston would partner with Cosworth for all their engine development.

Looks like you're sat in a concept car.
Too bright and contrasty for me. It'd look nice in reddrink

A One-77 is going to draw attention so why not go OTT with the interior ...

The interior door cards are works of art, such symetry in the carbon, but for me, the rims on the white one would look better for the black car too!

There was a black RHD one for sale not so long a go, I didn't even know that they had made any until I saw it. Fair play to them for doing so it could have been easy for them to keep it LHD only considering the very low build numbers. I'm not sure what it would suggest that 2 of the 9 RHD's at least have been sold on already? My only gripe with the car is the fact that it never seemed quite exquisite enough to justify being a top priced hype car. It doesn't have the fetish attention to detail of a Pagani (maybe I'm being harsh here as probably nothing does) and doesn't seem to have overcome any sort of technical hurdles like Bugatti had to with the Veyron or even the new wave of electrically assisted cars have combining the two forms of propulsion. On a basic level it doesn't appear to offer anything much above an Aventador technically if you take away the fantastic hand crafted panels. It could of (and should of in my opinion) been developed into the Vanquish and sold in the appropriate numbers, it really could have been an exceptional car in it's class

It reminds me of the LFA in the sense that it doesn't appear to offer more of anything over a less expensive but similar car (in this instance the F12) but at the same time it's a breathtaking thing and that engine is unbelievable.

Saw one and watched it fly past at Cholmondeley a few years ago and it was epic. If I had enough money that £1.2 million wasn't even an issue then one would be in the garage, though I'd probably ask Works Service to stick a decent gearbox in it in the near future.

I was at Aston Martin Works picking my Vantage up when i first bought it and in the workshop were 2 of these getting serviced. One on Swiss plates and the other i cant remember but was foreign. Guys there were telling me the owners from around the world send them back to Newport Pagnell to get serviced, no matter where they are. I suppose if you have the money then its just a case of telling Jeeves "the Aston needs servicing dear boy!". There was a "normal" V8 Vantage in there from Nigeria. Again that was flown over for servicing and each time they spend 2 days removing the dust and crap from it.

The Lfa is a lot lot closer in price to the F12 which you are comparing it to than the One 77 is and was pretty much universally praised by all who drove it for the overall driving experience and it's quality of execution not just the glorious sound of it's engine. The fact that you would need to have a different gearbox retro fitted say's a lot to me

I forgot about the cylinder liners which were plasma welded in? Contributed massively to the overall weight saving on the engine, that was pretty cool
