Alfa GTV6: You Know You Want To

Delicious example of the hallowed GTV6 commanding very strong money!

Not sold just on the pictures? OK, no problem. How about the noise? Still need some convincing? Right, a little more detail...

Dealer selling that Alpina too if you fancy...

This is a UK Alfa GTV6 with very few miles (64,000), a recent suspension refresh, tons of history and even the standard radio. It is perhaps the finest GTV6 you'll see for a long time.

There's more to be excited about too. As originality is becoming ever more important for classic cars this GTV6 can boast an untouched interior, a complete toolkit plus the same engine and paint as when it left the factory. We're told it's an original and solid shell also. For a 30 year-old car it looks remarkably fresh.

Yes, 30 years old. The 80s are fondly remembered as the era of sharp handling, desirable rear-wheel drive Alfa saloons and coupes. The 75 V6 you would buy in spite of its looks but the GTV6 combined the dynamics with the style to create one of Alfa's most celebrated models. The 4C may have resurrected the RWD Alfa sports car but it's a very different proposition to the old stuff. More on that in due course...

Well obviously they're faster in red

The appeal of the GTV6, in addition to that already mentioned, was its practicality. A genuine four-seat coupe that your friends could come along and enjoy too. Or a family, if it must be justified to them... Then there was the motorsport success, with four consecutive European Touring Car Championships between 1982 and 1985. You really want it now, right?

Excellent, because it's up at £20,450. Wow. It's the only GTV6 on PH but searching round elsewhere throws up what look like very presentable and enjoyable cars for half that. They're probably not quite as pristine as this car though, and for some people its apparently impeccable condition will be sufficient. And at least if does end up in a collection nobody will ever tire of looking at it.

ALFA GTV6
Price:
£20,450
Why you should: One of Alfa's finest, cared for and pristine
Why you shouldn't: Pricey and, er, well...

I wish I hadn't seen that. I'm trying to work out how to afford it now, though I actually prefer the look of the 75 Cloverleaf in many ways. It's just so '80s it's beautiful!

My father had them, by godfather had them and my uncle had one. Irritating and wonderful cars – Proper Alfas. Love the fact that in the vid the clock is not working… Italians.

Didn't realise they had a pool table in the back!

Seriously gorgeous car.

20k maybe strong but not many about.

There was no factory 3.0 GTV6. 2.5 only.

Great car but price seems high. £6k was the ceiling for these ten years ago. That said, everything else seems to have gone mental so maybe I'm out of touch.

Here's the one I had in '94. It was 10 yrs old at the time and looked great but had some tin worm (most do). Stuck a Momo Monte Carlo wheel on it (which I have kept as a souvenir) and loved it to bits. The top end was a bit tappety but an ex-Alfa mechanic suggested that I just lived with it as he couldn't guarantee that he could set it up any better. A tad frustrating at times sourcing bits even though it was *just* 10 years out of production at that point. Sounded good all the time but never better than when the back box needed changing!

Always seen plenty for sale over here on the Swiss market including this FIA Group 2 version for circa £100k and there's a video link embedded in the photo section (fast forward to where the music stops).

Have not ruled out owning another at some point!

should the wheel not be wooden or was that an option at the time?

Lovely example with fabulous engine. Not a £20k Alfa though, in its day it was pretty good but certainly not a "celebrated' Alfa... don't remember any journos back then enthusing about it. Many considered it a poor styling followi on from the earlier 1750 /2000 GTVs. Would still like one though.

The South African market also introduced the 3.0 L GTV-6, predating the international debut of the factory's 3.0 L engine in 1987. 212 were built in South Africa for racing homologation. The last 6 GTV-6 3.0's were fuel injected.

Blimey - makes me very happy about mine!

Bought a couple of months ago for €7500 - 97000km documented (so about the same). smile

(Got the original Campagnolo (?) wheels as well - but they need a refurb)

Joined these:

1993 Alfa 155 Q4 - ex Alfa Romeo press car bought 2 years ago with 19800 km from new and a massive folder of documents - €6200

1973 Bertone 1750 GTV - bought last year for €7500

1990 S4 Spider - bought in 2010 for €5300

Firmly in the 'stuff I wish I bought when it was cheap' list.

My parents' red GTV was my earliest memory (circa 1985) and they've remained a favourite ever since. Back when they were £5k for a good one it seemed to be a disproportionately exotic Italian toy for the money. But £20k? Not sure my love for GTVs stretches that far, and my wallet certainly doesn't.

I'm not convinced they are.

For a while good ones were into double figures (and I'm talking fully rebuilt examples from the likes of Alex Jupe Racing). Dunno if they've all shot up or if this seller is taking a chance. Maybe it is a really exceptional example that justifies that sort of price, but certainly putting classic cars up for twice the price they'd normally be valued at and seeing if anyone bites is not unknown.

ETA Looks like I'm just a bit out of touch with the prices. That's the same sort of money that Alex Jupe is charging these days! http://www.alexjupemotorsport.co.uk/cars-for-sale

20K ? Alright it looks in great shape, but not so long ago rough ones of these could be found in scrapyards & council estates !......It's nice, but it has no real pedigree, just a regular production car, unlike some of its illustrious forebears now they should be worth 20k, but they're probably nudging 50 !! That's without touching Mega Alfa territory of course.

It may be worth £20K to a certain Mr Clarkson.

It looks expensive compared to that green South African one that had the 3 litre engine in it that was on eBay a couple of months ago.
