Hello,
I have an LS7-powered GTR. Very nice (even if the LS is a big of an unsophisticated brute). I'd like to hear from anyone who has an LS-powered Ultima (or any LS7 expert) to hear about where their oil-pressure sender is mounted and any issues they might have with accurate oil-pressure readings. The sender on my car is mounted as part of the oil filter assembly and reads 98 lbs at startup, never gets below 68 lbs (when warm and at idle) and often exceeds 100 lbs if I put my foot in it.
I've read conflicting information on the subject - and thus this note. The motor is an LS7 crate engine. I am not the builder/original owner and I am certain that the builder did an excellent job. Though oil pressure has already read this high, I've read that high readings are an indication of a failing sender. I've also read that mounting the sender at the oil filter is going to read this high because that's an accurate reading at that location. Finally I've read that the proper location for the sender is on the deck/manifold - though I've not poked through my motor to find the appropriate mounting point.
Any info?
Thx,
V

On my LS7 the oil pressure sensor is at the top back of the block where the valley plate is located (I think this what you mean by deck/manifold).

Keeping in mind my engine is pretty much a full race spec but even after pre-heating, on start up I get 90 to 100 psi though once fully warm/hot (ca 110 to 120°c) after a good number of laps it will be be about 50 to 65 psi out on the track. At idle when hot it will drop to around 30 psi +/- a bit.

If you are running a standard sump there is a gallery tapping plug you can use right above the oil filter. If you are running an aftermarket sump you will most likely need a remote oil filter so tapping it off the filter housing is the obvious choice.

If there is any way that you could send (a) photo(s) of the mounting of the sender, I'd appreciate. I've never seen close to 30 psi at hot/idle.
Mine is a stock crate LS7 (accepting that there have been some changes of the location of the plug coils and the usual Ultima-required changes to the AC). The sensor is at the fitting just next to the oil filter on the bottom/left/rear of the motor.

I thought all LS7's are dry sump. No? I'm quite sure that mine is.

Rich,

there are aftermarket dry sump pans available for the LS7, e.g. the ARE pan that I use.
Instead of an oil filter flange it has ports to allow the use of an external oil filter.
I lowered my engine by approx. 30 mm using this pan and cutting away some
useless parts.
