1969 Dodge Charger: Spotted

Two notable former owners, one 8.1-litre engine and a hundred thousand of your English pounds

Ultimate bad guy car? Has to be up there. We're all aware of the Charger's most famous cinematic role and it played the villain's car so perfectly because it looks, well, villainous. The front is bluff and angry, the sheer size is imposing and black always makes cars more terrifying. It wouldn't quite work in yellow, would it?

What you looking at?
What you looking at?
So as specifications for Chargers go, this one has to be one of the most desirable. Yes, it's an auto and, yes, it isn't an R/T, but it is black and it does have an engine even more potent than an R/T. As in 496 cubic inches, or 8.1-litres. A great big eff-off lump of V8 muscle to give the Charger another hit of automotive aggression. In case a plain old Hemi was a bit meek.

Looked at the advert yet? Thought so. Shocked at the price? Yep. However, as previous owners to have on a car, Jay Kay and Bruce Willis are fairly incredible names to feature. Willis owned the car for a decade and it was with Jay Kay from 2008 until the sale now. It was the latter who spent a reputed £25K on the larger engine. Figures.

PH doesn't typically get excited about celebrity ownership, and the car is certainly interesting enough to feature on its own merit, but this may be the exception. A Dodge Charger owned by Bruce Willis? Come on!

There's muscle and then there's muscle
There's muscle and then there's muscle
Now £105,000 is a lot of money, particularly for something that's probably best enjoyed as a static object. As an alternative along similar lines, thisMustang is a little more affordable and has been subjected to what appears a magnificent restoration. Shame it's not a Highland Green GT390 really...

Furthermore, it seems classic Americana is having its own price rise anyway. There's a Camaro at £95K and three old Corvettes at well over £100K which makes the Charger look if not reasonable then a little more understandable.

There's a horrible suspicion that an old US muscle car will always be worse than expected in the UK. It probably won't even burnout that well with an auto. But for those who like classic muscle there's arguably nothing more desirable than an old black Charger. Its ownership history just seals the deal. Hopefully it will be bought by a petrolhead who will really appreciate it rather than a (very wealthy) fan collecting memorabilia. After all, Jay Kay clearly enjoyed using the car so it would be rude not to continue in a similar vein!

DODGE CHARGER
Price:
£105,000
Why you should: "What do you drive?"/ "8.1-litre Dodge Charger"
Why you shouldn't: "Cool, how much was it?/ "Err... 8.1-litre Dodge Charger"

See the original advert here.

Perhaps its just the way its been photographed but looks to me like the front and rear wheels have different profiles, which looks abit weird.

However- I bet it sounds superb, some muscle cars are pretty useless but they all tend to sound amazing. I hope this one rocks slightly on its suspension with each thud of the exhaust :-)

A thousand times yes - I am mildly obsessed by these and have been since I was a small child raised by essential Saturday tea-time episodes of The Dukes of Hazard (plus Bullit, and Crazy Mary and Dirty Larry a few years later.)

If I had the money and space I'd buy this and install it as a piece of art. I can't think of a more menacing and brutal production car design; it's perfect.

However I strongly suspect they are better appreciated from the outside than in.

As much as I love a Charger, I'd take the Eleanor Mustang and go baby go!

Was that the POS which was apparently more desirable and faster than any other car on earth forever and ever. From that towering pile of horse manure remake of Gone in 60s?

Although hard to think they actually managed to top that with the running joke in Need for Speed and yet another unique better than all cars in the universe ever Ford Mustang.

About as desirable as Del Boy's Ford Capri and as relevant as a cowboy anywhere other than where cowboy's are supposed to be...

Say what? It has a £25,000 8 litre V8 in it. You will literally need to own your own tyre shop to own it. Even an original R/T would have laid 11s for fun.

tut tut.

Yes, that's the one and it was poorly customised too but hey, there's no need to push Charger prices any more smile

Think you mean a Charger. Do you think you might be taking the films a bit seriously? Being poorly portrayed in films does not make them less desirable. Look at Megan Fox.

Love Chargers but prefer the '68 model.
Used to like Eleanors, but now prefer standard 67/68 Mustang fastbacks.
That Camaro is NOT a '69 model, totally different shape, '70 at the earliest.

I think it's a myth started by top gear that Autos can't do burn outs. Which is utterly wrong.

Autos are better for burnouts as long as your motor isn't gutless. Plus manuals have a nasty habit of breaking easily.

I can't help but take a film with cars far more seriously than I should. The never ending obsession in US movies with Mustang's completely messes up my suspension of disbelief, no matter how ridiculous everything else may be.

I simply cannot deal with it.

It was definitely a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 in Gone in 60 and also a 2013 Shelby Cobra GT500 (nee Mustang) in Need for Speed. Portrayed as capable of lapping a circuit quicker than even a Koenigsegg Agera R.

I've never known anything so ridiculous in my life! Even the 24 speed Toyota Supra's in Fast & Furious are more credible.

My auto wheel spins regularly (chipped 320cdi CLK), not sure about burn outs but I'm sure if I turn the traction control off it will do it with a bit of practice.

Its been known to spin the wheels if I accelerate from 50-70 on a wet motorway too. So much torque.

Not really, Id rather have an American V8 petrol, than a German V6 diesel.

I was talking more about torque and auto box's
