SEAT Leon bags new 'ring lap record

Leon now fastest estate car round the Nordschleife; time to book a C63 wagon and Eurotunnel ticket?

So what's fastest? Estate or hatchback? The answer, as any Volvo driver, knows is of course estate. And SEAT has proved it by getting its tame Spanish racing driver, Jordi Gene (Marc's older brother) to drive the Leon ST Cupra 280 round the Nurburgring three tenths of a second faster than he achieved in the hatchback version last year to record a 7min 58.12sec.

SEAT insists the ST used to achieve this was unchanged from the production car, here fitted with the manual gearbox and mythical Performance Pack featuring bigger brakes, Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and - in its most extreme form - no air-con. Or air vents. Even if they did have a few tricks up their sleeve, to crack a time that a dozen or so years ago wouldn't have shamed a 911 Turbo is pretty impressive.

'Darling, could you just pop to Adenau for some milk?'
'Darling, could you just pop to Adenau for some milk?'
It's also getting fairly ridiculous as manufacturer after manufacturer piles round the Nordschleife to be the first to claim certain production car records. SEAT did briefly hold the record for fastest front-drive production car last year until Renault pinched it straight back off them shortly afterward in the Megane RS 275 Trophy-R with a time of 7min 54sec.

Then of course Honda this year came along and said, ner-ner, we'd beaten you all along with our Civic Type R with a time of 7min 50sec achieved last year. Albeit in a production car not yet in production ... and quite obviously caged and with significant interior parts (passenger seat included) removed.

Obviously in the world of virtual Nurburgring trophies SEAT now has the fastest production ESTATE record. Presumably VW could pinch that quite easily with its more powerful four-wheel drive Golf R estate, which would mean SEAT could insert the words 'front-driven'. If Honda nicks that with a Type R Tourer record (this is supposition - no such car has been announced) then SEAT would have to come back with a fastest estate with a roofbox, or some such nonsense.

The manual Cupra ST does weigh 45kg more than the hatchback at 1,440kg, and is two tenths slower to 62mph at 6.1 seconds. But it's apparently faster on the long straights thanks to extra slipperiness of the body shape. What we don't know is whether it was achieved with the rear seats up or down. That's an extra two seconds right there.

That, combined with an open glove-box...

Still, pretty good effort I'd say smile
Not that any ring record would affect my buying decision in any way whatsoever...

Aside from the retarded 'zzzz' comments above, loving the classic seats down stuff. Remember this from a forum long long ago. Still makes me chuckle!!

SEAT literally live at the ring just to post a lap time after 500000 attempts.

put the same driver or in fact any competent driver in an RS4, RS6, E63 estate etc and see how far behind it is, such a stupid statement to try and say its the fastest estate.

We also don't know the tyre pressures, extras, etc. 2psi more in the front, heated seats, two cats in the boot, then it's more like a 911. Draining the washer fluid makes a big difference. Trust me, I went to college.
biggrin
Don't forget that as temperatures rise in May there's more evaporation, so you'll need to top up your indicator fluid more often.

I reckon the ECU had a temporary overboost (to say, 350ps) function on it that expired after the 'official' lap.

Is there an official body that scrutinises the cars after the lap for such things?

No, it didn't. Niether I, nor anyone else is going to buy this car just because it goes round a racetrack in Germany in a certain time. Its going to be bought because its a swift estate car. A likely buyer will test drive this, a Focus ST and possibly an Octavia VRS, and will buy what ever suits their wallet/prejudices/needs/wants best. And will probably end up buying the diesel version anyway.

These Nurburgring times are pointless meaningless drivel.

I kind of respect Maclaren's take on it with the P1. "Yes, we went round the Nurburgring jolly fast, but we're not telling you how fast, so there" tongue out

What they actually meant was "slower than the 918" IMO. They'd have sung it from the rooftops had they nailed it.

Ha ha! Quite possibly. It would be interesting to see what the same driver on the same day in both cars could manage. I'm convinced this makes more of a difference than blind performance alone.

How many body styles, drivetrains etc do we have to go through until we stop this crap?

I think next it's going to be the fastest RHD drive

Then the fastest car on 17' wheels

Then the fastest sort-of-SUV, you know for os X1, Q3s etc - that kind of crowd.

The masses and masses of people who like cars but arent clued up on them would disagree with you there. The same people who make up the largest portion of Top Gear's huge demographic.

This stuff works wonders in the showrooms. It makes the car a purchase with the heart as well as the head as they buy into it and feel proud of what they've bought. Engineered marketing but you cant blame anyone for it, the firms sell more cars and the consumer are happier with where their hard earned is going.

Us 'people in the know' can vote with our feet and buy the cars we feel to have true merit in whatever guise, but effectively the motives are exactly the same.

'Ring times are only of interest to those who intend to drive quickly on bumpy roads, completely pointless otherwise.

I care. I know that's a deeply unfashionable opinion, but I can live with that.
