Moss on Mille Miglia: Time For Tea?

Still regarded as one of Moss's greatest achievements, the man himself celebrates 60th anniversary of his win

The story of Stirling Moss's celebrated victory in the Mille Miglia 60 years ago is one told in many ways over the years, most notably by his co-driver and Motorsport correspondent Denis Jenkinson. If you've never read his contemporary account it's well worth digging out.

For now this lush video by Petrolicious and supported by Mercedes is pretty much as good as it gets, featuring Moss himself, his famous '722' 300SLR and contributions from Vic Elford, Jochen Mass, Brian Redman and more besides.

While the world - including our own Matt - is out in Italy enjoying the Mille Miglia here's a little taste you can enjoy at your desk with a brew.

Watch the video here.

Petrolicious always do a good job recording these, and what a sound to capture, a very musical car, lovely.

This prompted me to seek out the famed Denis Jenkinson article, a very interesting read http://www.foodman123.com/moss.htm

A legend in his own lifetime a seriously impressive drive that even by today's standards sounds impossible!

Lovely video. This race, in that year of 1955, with the Moss/Jenkinson win to its name, is responsible for kindling my lifelong interest in Motorsport.

I was at some boring family meeting as an idle 11 or 12 - year old and my uncle thrust the June 1955 edition of Motor Sport magazine in to my hands with the words "have a look at this..". I found the famous Denis Jenkinson article in it and in moments was transported to the sunshine, sounds and smells of road-racing through rural Italy. It is a fabulous read and any motor journalist would give their right arm to have been its author.

I've driven quite a lot of the Mille Miglia course over the years while on various visits to Italy. The city sections no longer make sense with modern traffic volumes, but the more rural ones do. You can still see the odd faded 1950's signage around the course, if you keep a sharp eye.

Am deeply jealous that Dan is following the current MM this year; full report, please, so I can sigh over it and once again wish I was there...
