Hello all,

Looking to spend up to around £100k on something Super. Something that will make me feel special every time it's used.

Not for track days, I have the TVR for that itch, but purely for enjoying myself and some Euro trips. Will do plenty of miles.

Must haves:
Convertible
Naturally aspirated
Great exhaust sound

Dont Mind:
E-Gear/F1 transmissions

Definite No Go's:
White cars
Aston Martin
Porsche

So far I'm thinking Gallardo, late F430, possibly a California (looks an issue here though)...... Murcielago's are sadly out of budget. Anything else I should be looking at? Something more modern too, say 10-12 years max

Thanks in advance.

First thought was a Murcielago or 550. Then saw it had to be convertible...

If you're fine with LHD then there's a few Murcielago Roadster's in the EU for sale for equivalent of £100K.

If not, then I'd have an F430 Spider manual.

I had the same requirements and ended up with a F430 Spider from a main dealer. I don't think I could have done any better, to me it's certainly the far superior car for this purpose than the California.

The California doesn't really feel all that special to drive, it could be from any auto manufacturer, there is nothing other than that badge in front of your face to let you know that it is a Ferrari.

I would probably just aim to buy a F430 Spider from a main dealer with the exact spec you want - pay close attention to choosing the right seats, carbon ceramic brakes, carbon interior (must have to get the carbon wheel which feels way better & even more special) and colour inside and out. Speakers are pretty bad even with the power hifi.

I'm sure that will be the best option for you.

Murci roof is a pain even after a bit of practice and the wheel shimmy is visible over the bumps. And LHD on that car is a nightmare in the UK.

I would suggest an R8 V10 Spyder but the meagre luggage space probably wouldn't suit your Euro trips plan.

Your thread reads like you've already decided on a Gallardo and that's no bad thing, luggage space in a Spyder is horrendous though.

Anyway, a Gallardo Spyder gets my vote but I am brand bias now, it's also hard to beat that V10 scream.

My view of the California is very different to the one above!
Brilliant car with 2 personalities, you can drive long distances in comfort & when you fancy, hit sport/manual, drop the roof & the car comes alive, the engine note is sublime & it's more than quick enough...
I had one after f430 & Gallardo, it felt way more modern & is every inch a Ferrari !
Go test drive one, you may be surprised...

I just wish so much I felt that way! In every possible way I want the California. OK so it isn't quite as exciting to look at as the mid-engined machines, but it does everything I want from the weekend car. However I take them out on a test drive and they just don't do it for me, not sure why, but doesn't have that final % of excitement that I look for in a second car.

Even the California T doesn't do it for me, and that's in another league performance wise to my 430. But just not the excitement.

Go and take a 458 out though and 1 minute into driving and it's everything I want it to be, just a bit pricey for me right now - well the Spider anyway - but without a doubt absolutely delivers everything that I could possibly want in a second car. (except a place to stow away the 7 year old!).

Ferrari F355 Spider Manual or a Mercdes Pagoda.

If you could push to £150k I would get a "Silchester Pagoda".

For a modern car, I concur with a California.

How about a Maserati GranCabrio? A great long distance cruiser that sounds fantastic and is less mileage sensitive than a Ferrari.

for plenty of miles, you need an audi, so Gallardo it is then...... and that n/a v10 is totally bonkers.... free revving to over 8k red line, loads of low down torque, almost sounds like a v8 below 4k revs..... and its sound at full chant, think f1 race car.

Morning. Thanks for all the replies.

The Maserati looks interesting. Great, great noise but the two tonne weight is a bit off putting. I'll probably have to try one first though.

Audi R8 sadly does nothing for me. In any guise.

Am I completely dreaming that I could buy a rhd Murci Roadster for £100k privately in the UK?

If age was not an issue, then a Pagoda would be a very good shout - ran past one on Sunday in Highgate. Achingly pretty.

Will try and get in a few cars today and keep you posted. Hoping to wrap this up this week !

You really want to be looking at the MC version of the Gran Cabrio, more focused than the regular one and the noise is incredible. Would also do the European trip thing better than any of the others mentioned. Drive one and see what you think, reckon you may be surprised!

+1

Although, seeing as you have an appreciation for British hand-made cars, have you considered a Morgan? The Aero Supersports (removable roof) may be a little out of your budget but a new Aero 8 will be under £100k.

BTW, nothing wrong with white cars! biggrin

Not everyone's cup of tea but something I couldn't be without.

These videos are worth a look (of the Coupe, essentially a Supersports without the £30k removable roof option!)

The attention any Aero model (8, 'Max, SuperSports or Coupe) gets is just silly but always positive, unlike that with Italian supercars...

Whatever car you get, enjoy the search, there's some amazing machinery out there for that money. yes
