Weed killer - Nuclear Strenth
Discussion
I'm officially fked off with weeds. Just had the patio cleaned and re-sanded. In theory the guy put down strong weed-killer too - although I was not around to see that and have some doubts.
Anyway, we have weeds again.
What's good at getting rid of them as permanently as possible. The stuff at garden centre seems to merely act as food for them nowadays....

Been looking at this myself recently, virtually everything you can buy in B&Q or garden centres is Glyphosate based, and to the pretty much the same stuff in different packaging. It's OK... but that's it.
If you are brave, and you can find it, then try Sodium Chlorate, but it was banned as a weedkiller a few years back. Easier to obtain is Ammonium Sulphamate - get this on amazon, sold as as a flame retardant and plasticiser...
I've also got some SBK off Amazon - it is triclopyr based, and only kills broadleaf weeds like nettles, brambles, ground ivy etc, and pretty much leaves grass alone.

Glyphosate is non-residual; in other words it will kill the weeds but leave the soil free for the next crop.
You need a total residual product, but as said most have been banned for garden use.
The most efffective treatment I found was opened-out binliners with gravel on top. It was 20 years until a few weeds started to establish in the blown-in dust.

Don't get it on areas you want to keep growing however.

My sisters and agronomist who advises on the use of agrochemicals. She reckons the average punter can't get hold of many decent weed killers these days, but recommended I try a mix of Vitax SBK (available on amazon) and overstrength roundup to kill off the brambles that invading from next door. Seems to have done a good job so far.

I just filled the gaps in the patio with salt, with a slight brush of sand on top for color. Nothings grew back yet, but its cheap for a huge bag at the wholesaler and ill just top it up when some grows back.
Yep, I use salt for around the gravel edges of the drive. Good few handfuls kills off everything, and it stays dead for a while. If the Bible advises salt the earth...that's good enough for me!RizzoTheRat said:

This is true. Find an agricultural supplies, they sell the proper industrial strength stuff. Lots of them in the country !RizzoTheRat said:

An agrochemical adviser advises you to use a dosage greater than the product has approval for...?We used to say that no-one uses the correct dose rate (the one loads of official field trials have been carried out to establish). Half the punters use half as much to save money, the other half use twice as much to make sure it works. Doh!
I had a letter from a distraught fellow who had used sprayed one of our total path/drive weedkillers over his entire garden and killed everything... it was hard to pen a sympathetic reply; I managed it somehow. But he certainly wasn't getting a freebie - our product had worked!
I've used this for the first time on recommendation and been really impressed with it. We have a very large block paved drive to the house and I used to spot weed a couple of times a week at this time of year but so far 6 weeks in I've done nothing and no weeds at all.
I used a large backpack sprayer to ensure a good wet coverage and mixed at the recommended strength

To be clear I've no idea what it's like for an already heavily weeded area but once clear in terms of easier maintenance it seems to be better than anything else I've ever used

Amazing what vinegar can do https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/pdfs/weedkiller-for-...I used a large backpack sprayer to ensure a good wet coverage and mixed at the recommended strength

Worth noting that spray is more effective than watering can due to surface area:volume ratio of droplets plus less run-off.

As someone who has worked in the agrochemical sector for years, it really is painful to read some of these replies. No wonder we have so much regulation and so many products and actives being lost.
Ironically that's exactly what's driving users away from garden centres and onto eBay or farming buddies. More rules = more sidestepping.Where's ioxynil when you need it eh?

What ratio do you mix it? I'm guessing it won't say on the packet?
I put 1KG of the stuff and made it up to 2 gallons in my little sprayer.Killed the fk out of everything. including the bits of the lawn I accidentally spilled it on... whoops.
You could draw cocks on your neighbours lawn with this stuff and it'll be winking at them by the morning.
As for glyphosate, the dilutions in the shop stuff are really weak. Get some Gallup 360, it's basically the neat stuff, I managed to kill an absolute tonne of ivy with a combo of that and a few other bits and bobs.
