Camaro Z/28 at Hockenheim: Time For Tea?

So how quick is a Z/28 really? It's lapped Hockenheim as fast as an R8 V10...

All those who have so far experienced the Camaro Z/28 have come away fairly stunned by the experience. A 7.0-litre V8 with some very trick internals, a load of weight thrown out and 305-section Pirelli Trofeo Rs at each corner (!) have produced startling results. Now the Germans have one...

This being a German test, specifically a Sport Auto one, the numbers are vital. As this is just a track test, there's only one figure that counts: the lap time. Here the Z/28 clocks a 1min 10.8sec lap of the Hockenheim short circuit. For reference that's identical to an Audi R8 V10 S-Tronic tested last year and way ahead of the 1min 13.1sec recorded by an M3 recently.

An incredible time then, but an incredible thing to watch too. Those tyres give the Camaro unbelievable composure through bends, the car locked onto line with just the odd tiny correction here or there. The turn-in speed with so much rubber across the front is absurd, and most contribute significantly to that lap. Imagine attending a UK track day in one...

Absolutely. Thanks to the Chevrolet dealer in Mason Ohio got to give a C7 a once over but the Z28 was beyond exciting. Those Tropheos were so soft there was glass stuck in them, and the width! We are talking Lamborghini levels of front rubber. Brilliant car built with all the focus of a Lotus Carlton, more so in certain respects.

Out of all the "new-classic" muscle cars Chevrolet always seems to be doing more than just making it look pretty. I love this car!

I am currently bombing round the west coast of the US in a Camaro SS and have found it to be a great steer with bags of grip, the z28 must be mighty impressive. They are bloody wide though....
