Mitsubishi Evo X FQ-440 MR: Spotted

Missed the ultimate Evo when announced? Fear not, there's one in the classifieds...

"As soon as it's released you'll see nearly all of these for sale at £39,950." That's just one of many fascinating comments in the thread following the Evo X FQ-440 MR announcement. Sorry to disappoint Mr Pommygranite, but that doesn't appear to be the case. This Evo is £55K. Erk.

You could have taken it somewhere nice
You could have taken it somewhere nice
You'll remember the Evo X 440 sold out very quickly at launch, the 40 units reputedly snapped up within an hour. Some of these will have been purchased by aficionados but of course some will have been allocated to dealers as well. Given this car already has a private registration it would appear to have reached a customer first and then a dealer. All guesses welcomed as to why...

The 440 certainly stands out in Station Garage Mitsubishi's stocklist. Currently the Aberdeen dealer has four cars for sale: an ASX, an Outlander, a 'normal' Evo X and then the 440. Quite the line-up. Even compared to the Evo FQ-330 the new car looks wild; the vortex generator is back, the front end is noticeably more aggressive and this car gets mud flaps too. Because rally car and all that.

There was an FQ-440 at our recent Wilton House Sunday Service and it looked brilliant actually. Lowered and hunkered down over those gorgeous BBS wheels it undoubtedly had presence, even amongst the assembled array of PHer metal. If the owner sees this we'd love to know how you are getting on!

Dual-clutch only remember
Dual-clutch only remember
The big question with this Evo must surely be how much of that £55K you're likely to see again. Yes, it's a very limited edition and it will likely be the last pre-hybrid Evo but it also arrived when this type of car was arguably at its least popular. When the Evo Tommi Makinen and Impreza 22B were launched the rally reps were seriously desirable, which is now being reflected in their appreciating values. Those wishing to relive the glory days of WRC are having to pay for the privilege. The Evo X was never the most coveted fast Lancer so it will be interesting to see how far the 440 depreciates.

You probably don't need reminding that £55K is BMW M3 money, or that £20K less buys an FQ-400 with fewer than 20,000 miles. This car will always be a tough sell but surely in Scotland is the place for it to be enjoyed? Just don't forget about that data recorder...

Tis no 22B anyhow that's for sure. No real want for this at all which surprises me slightly. Give me a nice Evo 5 any day.

I'd rather and Evo 6 Xtreme than this. Odd that the Evo X seems to be very unloved.

I thought that until I'd driven a few. I was not impressed. The manual box felt horrid, the auto felt old tech, the engine sounded unpleasant and it wasn't anywhere near fun enough to forgive that (the FQ 330 I test drove braking down on the test drive did little to increase my liking of it either). The EVO VI I once had a play with one the other hand.... great fun!

Above all else these cars and their Subaru equivalents offered maximum performance for your pound. I'm sure this is crazy fast but its got serious competition at 55k.

That said its one of those cars I'm going to have to own one day, or at least the MR9 360.

The evo 6 was best looking in my opinion looked like it drove straight off rally stage, and was a lighter car than later models which just kept getting bigger.

I actually think this will keep it's value as long as you keep it for a long time and look after it. Bit like original RS500.

Have you seen that front wheel arch though. The neighbours will think I am a Honda Civic chav if I buy it.

nerd

40 cars, last of it's line / era. Worth a punt I think and you will cover A to B indecently rapidly in it whilst waiting for it to make your bank manager happy.

I'm surprised at the quoted 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds - this seems a bit slow surely for something with over 400BHP and 4 wheel drive?

I'm thinking that's the time for a 'normal' Evo X and not the FQ440;

The Evo 8 FQ400 (the one Top Gear reviewed) does 0-62 in around 3.5!

Turbos have come on a (long) way from that old lag monster (on the FQ-400 VIII)...

That 0-60 time is for the 296bhp evo x, I was always lead to believe that these were in the low 3's but I currently can't find anything to back that up read

I would love one but just not at that price. I would rather have a Subaru Cosworth for around 30K, having already owned one, I know what to expect.
All the same I think I will keep an eye on the prices of these monsters and see what happens. idea

If i was in the market for a £55k limited edition car with 400+ BHP i'd be more tempted by this 1 of 1 V8 Z3M by Hartge:

Obviously a very different beast in many ways, but of the two i find this hugely more desirable.

Hmm, you'd have to really want an Evo to pick this over a GT-R.

Strangely, Mitsubishi hasn't released performance figures for the car?
Mitsubishi Brochure Download only gives me lesser models (300/330/360)...

The manual-transmission Evo 400 could hit 62mph in a 3.8sec iirc.

Been for sale for absolutely ages this has. I'm not sure what that suggests but you would have thought that if it was worth having someone would have bought it by now.

I'm sure if the Evo's and Scooby's were still tearing it up against each other around the world there would be more love for the last generations but they just weren't as relevant or interesting with no direct links to top class motorsport

One one hand it is unique and cool. On the other hand it is a £55k clowns shoe hehe

Hmmm, £55k for a nearly new 4 door 2.0 saloon...

or, £55k for a brand new 4 door 6.2 supercharged saloon with 576bhp.

I know where my money would go \/

I wouldn't have the balls to drop £55k into an Evo, but I certainly wouldn't splash the same amount on a brand new Vauxhall laugh

It sounds good this car until you really think about it. That V8 was a glorious thing in the M5 and the coupe was always highly regarded as a drivers tool regardless of any personal preferences on it's looks but I can't see that all the added weight in the nose is going to have done it any favours as far as the handling balance is concerned and big wheels/modded suspension is always going to be a bit hit and miss. I can only see this as being more cruiser now than sports car even if it does sound like a cool idea on paper.

I've just looked at the pictures of the Evo on the actual advert. It really annoy's me when I see photo's of nice cars for sale and there are bit's and bob's stuffed in the door bin's as if it's in mid use. Not great on a car with only 15 miles on the clock!
