The new supercar elite: Delivery Miles

This year's supercar hot tickets are finally arriving in the UK, with some chunky premiums attached...

Yes! The Porsche 911 GT3 RS has finally landed on UK shores. No question, it's this year's most desirable car for me and just about everyone I know. 500hp, half-cage, four-wheel steering, 3.3sec 0-62mph time and a spec worthy of an RS-badged 911.

Sadly, if you haven't already got your order in, you can forget about buying one new - Porsche says the RS has long since sold out, although it has yet to declare exactly how many it'll be making.

Big, big premium required for a 991 RS
Big, big premium required for a 991 RS
The only way you're going to get into a new RS is to take someone else's build slot - as Surrey-based Scuderia Automotive is offering. It's got a LHD GT3 RS in white due for delivery in late July.

Considering the UK RHD list price for the RS is £131,296, you might raise an eyebrow at the cost of this left-hooker. It's 215,000 euros excluding tax. That equates to £183,500 on the road, a gargantuan £50K price hike - and for a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side.

So you might consider it's worth going for the regular GT3 instead. But even here, prices are eye-watering - and you're going to have to put up with a left-hooker if you want it new. The list price on a regular GT3 is £100,540, but you'll have to shell out - wait for this - £155,995 for a new Carrera White GT3 with Clubsport Pack, fresh from Germany.

Another new GT3 is available (again LHD, again in white with a black interior) for £167,400. That's a scarcely believable £67K above list. Supply and demand...

Available for less than list price in fact

The 'other' GT3
If you tap the search term 'GT3' into the classifieds you'll end up looking at the wares of another manufacturer: Bentley. Its Continental GT3-R is an enthusiast-focused monster with just two seats, 580hp, 575lb ft and a kerbweight 100kg less than the regular GT V8 S.

Only 300 of these are being sold worldwide, of which just 34 are UK cars. A delivery-mileage 64-plate Continental GT3-R is up for sale in Rutland, priced at £225,950. That's actually a fair bit less than UK list price, so if you're a speculator, this probably isn't the car to invest in. If you like body stripes, though...

Other models in the Continental range can currently be had with plenty of money off, like the GTC Speed advertised at £178,969; around £7K off list.

£25K on top of RRP required for a GT now

AMazinG GT
And what price another of this year's hottest supercars, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT? Romans International has a GT S Premium Package that's in stock and physically available for £139,950. You guessed it, that's a fair whack over the list price of £114,695 - in fact, more than £25K over list.

Being the 'S' model it has 510hp, which means 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 193mph. It's fully specced with its Premium Package (Burmester stereo, panoramic glass roof, etc), while it also has the Dynamic Plus Package.

R8 bargains?
So there are lots of price hikes on the hot stuff - but what about cars that are nearing their sell-by date? Expect big money off. With the all-new Audi R8 also having made its UK debut at the recent Festival of Speed, dealers are keen to shift remaining examples of the outgoing R8.

In the classifieds is a tasty-looking brand-new Sepang Blue R8 V10 Plus with black Nappa leather, Bang & Olufsen stereo and rear-view camera. Yours for £111,969, or a full £25K off the Audi UK list price. Still want that 911 GT3?

Not surprised...

On another note, that AMG-GT looks positively evil.

Why does Porsche not increase the sale price of these limited run models, so it makes the money instead of dealers, owners & speculators?

Surely Porsche could have sold all GT3, GT3 RS and GT4 models for 20 - 40% higher list price from the outset (pure profit). Am I missing something?

Mercedes have lost the plot. The new C series looks like Lurpak that has melted. The A class has huge headlights tacked on and now this

That front grill with it's 1 million strictly come dancing glitter lights.

Audi are boring
Mercedes gone off the wall
BMW making ugly cars still

Jaguar with the XE/XF must be laughing.

PS Without that mouth full of silver capped teeth it would look very good. Smaller badge please though, this is not a Renault Clio with massive look at me <> badge.

I think the AMG would look better without any chrome/shiny bits on the front. Do it all in matte black (the trim that is) bounce

Would the higher prices be sustainable long term , with the volume they seek? The market is abnormal right now. They cannot drop list prices so easily.

Can someone explain to me the beetlemania that surrounds Porsche? I know they make some great cars and have a legendary sporting heritage and all that.
Is it just that these are seen as cast iron investments?
If they were never going to make another limited edition I could sort of understand it but there will be another one along in a minute.

Want - good product, good marketing - same for Rolex watches. Limited numbers.

Same with Apple - but those will only depreciate.

You might as well ask why crummy little Victorian houses in South London that were shoddily-built 130 years ago, with no foundations on clay soil, are selling for a million pounds. Bubbles don't have to make sense. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Rather than post code it is name here of course.

It's Wonga for the well heeled, but rather than borrow to pay more back, you borrow a lot more to get paid more back

Until the bubble bursts. Then it is sob story time how the government let you down smile

Greed, pure and simple.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here - OK, I'm not in the position to buy any of these cars, but none of them excite me in any way. Even the 911, and I like Porsches.

Maybe it's that none of them are supercars, nevermind the supercar elite. They are popular sportscar that are easy to live with as a daily driver. A supercar to me is something like a Pagani Zonda.

The may have supercar performance, but they don't make me moist.

Typically poorly researched article (again) the base list price for the 991 GT3 doesn't always reflect the actual price paid once optioned many were close to 125k list, there is also a huge spread on GT3's 185k-137k (RHD) so not all are carrying a 50k+ premium.

One of these was at Thruxton a few weeks ago. It looked great in my eyes and sounded awesome.

Looks are always subjective and I don't particularly like the new C Class (estate looks OK though) but the size and proportions of the AMG GT are just right.

Yes

That Matt blue looks like a cheap vinyl rap, the black wheels look chintzy and I'm shocked to say how old fashioned the car now looks.

On the road the new GT3 looks fabulous to these eyes - much lower, sleeker and muscular than a regular 911.

I'm not normally a doomsayer, but the last time we saw premiums like this was not long before a crash. Car prices across the board have been overcooked for a while IMO

What is anything worth...clearly only as much as anyone is prepared to pay, and if you are silly enough to pay over the odds then you are just fuelling the myth.
Still there will be winners and loosers...
