Hi all,
How do you go about ensuring that you put the right amount of oil in the gearbox, given that any standard reference to level is presumably out of the window on account of it being upside down? I am assuming it's a case of finding how much oil the gearbox is meant to have in it and measuring carefully. This assumes of course, that the amount should be the same regardless of inversion.
Unfortunately, I have already managed to find on the Internet two conflicting bits of information on oil quantity for my gearbox (a 997 turbo item), but can always check with Porsche, I suppose.

The oil level needs to be just above the bottom of the differential bearings, usually about 4 1/2 litres from memory. Easiest option is to drop Steve or Jason at AB an email they have a photograph of a turbo box with a line on showing where to fill to. I used a bent tie wrap to dip the oil through the side filling hole to get the level then offered it up to the imaginary line on the outside of the gearbox.

Better to have too much oil than not enough, so I have rigged a catch tank that returns to the box and the vent from this tank then goes to a simple plastic bottle that catches any that would normally be vented out. There is a vent from the bottle to allow the box to 'breath'.
Using this method the box sets it's own oil level. As we use the transmission in a way that it was not intended, it is important to ensure there is sufficient lubrication.
