Jaguar F-Type SVR spied

A faster and more track focused F-Type you say? Where do we sign?!

Ever since the Jaguar F-Type was launched, and especially since the coupe's arrival, there's been a tonne of speculation about the prospect of a flagship beyond the V8. An R-S, a GT, something along those lines. Now it seems there could be something close to a production reality.

Fixed wing, ceramics, new wheels - it's serious!
Fixed wing, ceramics, new wheels - it's serious!
This prototype has been spied at the Nurburgring, where no doubt a seven-minute something lap will be announced at some point. But even for those who aren't too fussed about lap times - there must be plenty - the F-Type SVR package looks very enticing.

See this car's more prominent front bumper, the fixed rear wing and different wheels. It's a wholly more aggressive look, one that looks great from here even beneath the camo. Yellow calipers denote carbon brakes, something you would hope to be standard on this car. JLR has previously stated that all SVRs will be 4WD as well.

Power? The standard V8 R is hardly short of performance with 550hp but a few more seems likely, just to force home the range-topping status. Will it top 600hp? Arguably of more relevance to the F-Type's dynamics though is weight, or rather a lack of it. The F-Type has always impressed dynamically but a suspicion has remained that it would be significantly improved by dropping a few kilos. Let's hope this is the car to get the F-Type under 1,500kg.

Is a little less weight too much to ask?

Given the manual gearbox is only available on the V6 F-Types it seems likely that the eight-speed auto will be offered. No bad thing, it's a very good gearbox. Worth remembering too that Jaguar's last track focused special was the XKR-S GT, a very expensive but extremely exciting car that promised a lot. Harris's review in fact concluded with "the GT is a great foretaste of what's to come from Jaguar... Imagine when they do that with the F-Type."

So yes, we're all very keen to see just what this F-Type becomes. With this year focused on the launch of the manual and all-wheel drive cars, it seems unlikely an SVR will be seen before 2016. One to steal the show at Geneva perhaps? We'll keep you posted.

Given the way JLR is developing, it looks like the car will perform as good as it looks.

Though of course it er won't be narly as good as the Cyamn and Boxter yah, or will it.

Have they done something to the headlights? Look nice.

F-type is one car that shouldn't have a spoiler, though frown

It appears that they have got a brilliant balance with the road cars, I'm hoping this is a track focused variant. Lightweight with lots of aero & power lick

Are Jaguar building a GTR slayer?

Lightweight is a relative term though - I bet it still weights 1500kg or so.

I'm hoping but not expecting that due to its high initial weight they can easily strip quite a bit out.

I sincerely hope not. I'd prefer a well sorted road car than a track focussed machine that is to hard to use everyday.

Presumably this will be an F-Type SVR and, if I'm not mistaken, JLR have said that all of their SVR models will be AWD. I desperately want one!

Impressive sounding as it stands at the moment.
Please, though, Jaguar, don't make it look like it crashed through a Ripspeed catalogue; its predecessor, the XKR-S GT had that Halfords ram-raid look, and surely they will make this look a little more, shall we say, grown up.

I saw a black F-type following a maserati this morning, the F-type looked far more impressive. I remember EVO did a speculative rendering of an RS F-type thought it looked great but can't find the pic online.

If the F-type is ever called an XK-F (like E-type = XKE) then I've got the ideal number plate for the RS version, "R5 XKF" on my RX7.

I just need the £100K+ for the car now....

I can't help wondering if it would be better if they used the F-Type S manual as the basis for this car. Usefully lighter than the V8 already, proper gearbox, chuck all the sound poroofing out, lightweight seats and ramp up the boost on the supercharger. More in keeping with the traditional RS ethos I reckon.

But we all know they won't do that, don't we?

Maybe, but it will cost 50% more than a GTR IMHO.

You're right! Story amended now, getting the JLR acronyms confused in the excitement of a new F-Type...

One man's meat and all that. I really liked the aggressive looks of the GT, and also like the current Civic Type-R... If the car's got the capability, why not shout about it a little?

Given the way the SVO team transformed the RR Sport, I have faith that this will be equally as impressive. Very much looking forward to the reviews!

Fair point Cotic, and I agree with you on the Civc Type R, it's smaller, and perhaps aimed at a younger, less affluent market.
I'm perhaps thinking of the aesthetically displeasing (to me at least) lurid blue paint and awful rear spoiler on the XF V8 R-S which to me was thr automotive equivalent of putting breasts on a fish.
Personally id look for dark colours, to make it look what it is, a threatening beast of a car. But as you say, we are all different.
As someone else has put, I wonder how many owners might contemplate taking their 5.0 supercharged car, and upgrading it with a smaller supercharger pulley, ecu remap, lightweight carbon shell seats instead of the heavy electric ones, removal of the rear seats etc, and still have a saving over the car featured here.

As awesome as this sounds, I can't help but feel seriously disappointed if the halo car in this kind of "lightweight" sports coupe isn't a true lightweight track special, and if they are targeting that, then I'll be similarly disappointed if its 4wd with an auto gearbox...

Is it just be that would love to see a truly pared back car? Lightweight everything, get it down to 1400 kgs, focus entirely on driving experience.

Not if they add 4 wheel drive, I think most people get too hung up on weight though, unless it's a track car or out and out sports car it's not such a big deal, this is more GT with attitude so while less weight is nice I don't think it's going to much lighter than the standard car if it's lighter at all
