£100K Garage: Ben Carter

See if you can spot the common theme linking Ben's £100K spending spree ... it's subtle!

Name: Ben Carter
Previously owned: Citroen C4 1.6 petrol
Currently owned: 2006 Impreza 2.0 R Sport
On the shortlist: "You may well spot the theme..."

SUBARU LEGACY STI (B4) (2005)
Cost:£9,400
Balance:£90,600
Why I Chose it: "Goes like the excrement off a digging tool and still has room for screaming relatives. And some shopping. And maybe a small dog. If I owned a small dog. Which I don't."

SUBARU BRZ SE LUX (2015)
Cost:£23,800 + £2K for new wheels
Balance: £64,800
Why I chose it: "Impractical enough not to be able to fit my screaming daughter or mother-in-law and quick enough to escape them. Hate the wheels though so would switch them out for something less ricey."

SUBARU IMPREZA 2.0 WRX STI R206 LTD EDN JDM MODEL
Cost:£37,989 + £5K for appearance changes
Balance: £21,811
Why I chose it: "A quick and relatively subtle Impreza without a ruddy great wing or huge bonnet scoop. I would change the wheels, wing mirrors and re-spray it though to make it a bit more sleeper/Q-car."

710BHP 2.35l STROKER FORGED SUBARU STI (2003)
Cost:£19,995
Balance:£1,816
Why I chose it: "Every list needs a Frankenstein's Monster and this is mine. Overpriced? Maybe. Mental? Yes. Mean as hell looking? Check. I would probably switch the rear wing out though to a lip spoiler as I quite like rear visibility."

SUBARU IMPREZA (44S) GX AWD 2001 (2001)
Cost:£1,650
Balance: £166
Why I chose it: "The wife will need something to drive and this is cheap and has pink wheels. She likes pink. Plus this is relatively economical and has cheaper insurance. Also it will give me a good laugh to see her driving it around with a very grumpy mother-in-law in tow!

"Remaining cash to be spent on petrol I reckon."

Either this is firmly tongue in cheek or you must live a tremendously boring life.

Hmm, not sure I'd go down this route if I was doing an all Subaru garage but each to their own! There would have to be a P1, a 22B, an SVX an RB5 and a McRae edition car in there, oh and a Forester STi would be the practical choice.

I've never understood why anyone would want loads of cars made by the same manufacturer - there's so many great cars made by so many different companies out there.

Life's to short for fanboyism. smile

Let's take this list at face value and assume it's not a wind up...

I would of course want to have a fast estate in my garage but it would probably be a German V8. With that said, I see nothing wrong with the Legacy and it's a just different way of have wardrobe-lugging thrills.

The BRZ...another fine choice. For days when you don't want to outright pace that's going to lose your license in no time at all. Something a little more exploitable like this should be in everyone's garage for big smiles at low speeds.

The three Imprezas are not by cup of tea although the Banzai powered one would be hilarious.

Got to have a Caterham/Atom to change things up a bit if you ask me and an R8 might go down well too. And a classic while you're at it...

Madness.

I'd just get a tuned Forester STi, which would cover all of the above bases (strong £ means fresh imports are going for £9k), and then some other interesting stuff from different manufacturers.

OK..
Now Im on my 3rd Subaru.. and I have to agree with the direction of the thread so far..
a few nice cars there.. but I think I would leave at it a Fozi STI and then pick up (ohh idea.. a Subaru Brat just for the hell of it)
some other more interesting cars.. land Rover sIIa 88".

I'm a Subaru owner and even I hated this feature... what a waste of time!

As said, worst yet.

It makes total sense to pay more for a limited edition JDM, only to then remove some of the value making it more like a standard car.

What does "ricey" mean?

I get that "riceburner" is a slang term for Japanese motorbikes and cars in America, and from this, people that like Japanese cars and bikes might often be referred to as "ricers", so in this context is he basically saying that the wheels look too Japanese?

Personally I don't like the standard BRZ/86 wheels much but more to the point, they don't really look very Japanese to me, more like the styles offered with some European cars. Plenty of options for decent alternatives without spending 2 bags though!

I think 'rice' is more 'Fast & Furious' style than simply 'Japanese'.

There are some very nice wheels from Japan.
