Coys Blenheim Palace sale results

A Ferrari Daytona record, another mega bucks Porsche RS and a few lovely Jags

Another auction, another suggestion this classic car bubble won't burst anytime soon. Coys has released results from its Blenheim Palace sale which saw a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 sell for £765,540. That's a UK record for Daytonas. Why? It's one of the first right-hand drive cars delivered to Britain and is described as a "museum quality example". Could it be that the soaring values of mid-engined 12-cylinder Ferraris are dragging up the front-engined cars yet further?

£427,000...
£427,000...
On a Ferrari note, the auction saw a 458 Speciale with 2,000 miles sell for £225,800, a pair of Testarossas make £69,000 and £74,600 plus a 612 Scaglietti with a winning bid of £55,560. Is the latter now the most affordable way into a 12-cylinder Ferrari?

It wouldn't be a classic car auction without some silly money being thrown at an air-cooled Porsche, as proven by the £427,400 paid for a 2.7 RS Touring. A Swedish car optioned with the limited-slip diff, Recaro seats and long range fuel tank, it's clearly a very special 911. Amazingly that sale price is at the lower end of its £425-£500,000 estimate...

£222,000. Huh?
£222,000. Huh?
Want some reference on that? That money would also have bought the Jaguar E-Type Semi-Lightweight, XK120 and XK140 also sold by Coys. Madness.

Interesting results elsewhere include a very late original Mini (2000MY) with 183 miles selling for £16,520, an Alfa Romeo SZ at £30,680 (they're creeping up) and Rod Stewart's old Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster, which made £178,760. It was subsequently owned by "iconic mystic former British wrestler Kendo Nagasaki". If the cars could talk...

Coys next auction is at the Nurburgring on August 8 as part of Oldtimer GP weekend. PH preview to follow soon!

I think it was yellow which won't help it's cause. 8k mile Spitfire sounds good. Nearly a million quid for a gullwing makes me wonder when the market will go through a "correction"

I was thinking about what a well-resolved and forward thinking design the Z1 was, and how much I'd like one, just yesterday.
Looks like I've got quite a lot of saving to do.

Personally I thought the Daytona looked pretty shabby - certainly NOT concourse. 'Museum quality' - if you mean it's old and tatty smile Regardless - a strong price.

I sold my 964RS at that auction.

I attended the auction and spent a long time admiring 'your' 964RS. I also thought that the Daytona was shabby, given the price it fetched. "Patina" is an interesting term...

The article fails to mention the very large number of cars that didn't reach their reserve. Chatting with a classic car dealer mate, he reckons that this is symptomatic of the market because people are losing confidence in the elevated values of classics and aren't so willing to sink daft sums into them.

The most interesting was the barn-find Aston Martin DB Mk3. It was an utter ruin with an upper estimate of £55k in the Coys brochure. In the end it went for well in excess of £100k. £120k + fees, if memory serves.

It was a good day out and I'd thoroughly recommend a visit to one of these high-end auctions. They seem to attract lots of very pretty girls!

I thought that car was hilarious - it had a label on it saying ... "one owner last 3 decades" - i thought ... one fking careless owner last 3 decades. smile
I have a pic somewhere ...

I was keeping an eye on the Maserati Karif which I confess I thought would go for more than it did (just over £15K). Okay, it's very much an oddball styling-wise but they're rare and seem to find eclectic owners who cherish and look after them.

As a result, they're generally in good condition without the neglect which usually accompanies the 'ordinary' sister BiTurbo cars. They're fast too and discreet (less so in red) and I've seen them advertised in the past (before the classic car boom, in fact) for close to £30K.

I have a sneaking regard for the Karif but I wouldn't admit that in public!!! After all I don't want Specsavers ringing me up all the time...

Have no idea on the spec, but I thought Speciales were changing hands for more than 225 in the classifieds etc.

It was red like all factory SZs bar a couple, and it definitely looks like someone got a bargain.
