Silverstone Auctions sale results

The 964 RS goes unsold at Silverstone Classic but there are plenty of interesting results besides

After all that hype and excitement that very lovely 964 RS went unsold at Silverstone Auction's sale this weekend. That's despite a high bid of £225,000, with the vendor holding out for £230,000. A significant moment in the incredible story of classic Porsche values?

Very High Performance, quite low price

The auction was also previewed in Chris's Under The Hammer story recently, covering the left field sports cars being sold. The stunning Pantera GT5-S obliterated its £100-£120,000 estimate, selling for £157,500. Less successful was the VHPD Caterham 21, which only just scraped through the lower end of its estimate with a sale price of £16,313. The NSX sold under estimate at £43,875 and, just to prove crazy values are not solely the preserve of the rear-engined Porsches, a 924 GT made over £50,000. Its guide price was £35-£40,000...

As always it was the unanticipated successes that are most newsworthy. A Mercedes 190 Evo II made six figures (£100,688) having been expected to make £65-£75,000, whereas a beautiful BMW 3.0 CSL, one of the first UK cars, sold at less than estimate for £58,500. Demand for the Renault Sport Spider shows little sign of abating either, this UK car selling for £21,375. Finally, here's an interesting one: a Jaguar Mk II upgraded by Lynx. What was a 3.8-litre car is now a 4.2 with an XJ40 automatic 'box, new Lynx suspension and uprated brakes too. Very nice. It sold for £55,125, comfortably surpassing a £38-£42,000 estimate.

Some tasty machinery there, still pretty big money for the 911 too.

very surprised about the Pantera GT5-S!
the RS owner really cared about an extra £5k?

Makes you wonder if the highest bidder on the 964 RS was the fire extinguisher in the corner! If it was a genuine bid you would have thought the seller would have accepted.

The RS owner was happy with the price and believed the car had sold. However there was a cock up with the auction and that bid was not valid. The owner and Silverstone Auctions are in discussions.

£150-170k is the more typical price range for a 964RS. Must be something special about that one to estimate at £230k.

"A significant moment in the incredible story of classic Porsche values?" Except that the 1973 911 2.7 RS Replica sold for over £100k, £20k over estimate...

The 996.1 GT3 was a relative bargain, in the context of today's GT3 market.

this 911 thing is nuts. I nearly bought a 964 coupe manual for £8000 about 5 years ago. Everyone but me seemed to hate them. It's all bandwagon stuff this. A LOT of people will loose a LOT of money soon when the bubble bursts....

I'm ooot.

Ah yes, I expect the back wall hadn't registered to bid. ;-)

Seems to be a fairly common problem at Silverstone Auctions, for which they are gaining an unfortunate reputation...

Could't agree more. Just like any market, prices are inflated by speculation and crashed by realisation.

Did anyone go to the competition car sale on Thursday evening? You could have had a complete running F1 car for £41K hammer price, while somebody paid 92K for a Ford Capri! The world has gone mad.

No one has mentioned the XKSS it seems. Perhaps this was the wrong place to try and sell a LHD car, but the RHD one that was sold last year at the Revival fetched £385,000 and this one had but one solitary bid of £200,000. I believe last year's car was a case of two people determined to have it at whatever price (Chris Evans) and it was completely rebuilt and had the Nicolas Cage name behind it but still I feel a seriously overpriced car, but at around half the price for this one I am surprised no one bid further. After all, they are selling new ones at £275,000.
