987 / 987C / 997 climate button refurb
Discussion
Just saw this on eBay (I am not connected with them) and thought what a great service - has anyone here used them or know of an alternative? Unfortunately on the newer cars the rubber finish starts to come away after a while. I find my eye is drawn to this as the white contrast exposed really stands out. These guys refurb them (you send your whole module in to them) for a fairly pricy £79. There is no alternative other than a new unit for big buckaroos (or a used one which may be down the road of wear appearing).
Any interest in a group buy? See if we could get 10/20 people and aim for £50 price maybe?

Ideally we could avoid going down the road of discussing how the earlier cars were better quality etc ...

Yes, I'm interested. I was looking at this the other night! Whilst I concede that rubberized coatings aren't the best, these cars are now over 10 years old. How long can we expect the aesthetic of switchgear to last before slamming Porsche for poor quality. Mine are just starting to go, but are still perfectly legible and functional.
I work in the coating industry, and that coating would've/should've been wear tested on a bench. A machine would've/should've spent a predetermined amount of time repeatedly pressing those buttons until either failure of the component/coating occurs, or the predetermined time is reached. Whether the tests were done for long enough or at all is anyone's guess!
Porsche clearly learnt, as G2 cars have hard coat switches.

I can't believe that this is the only way of fixing what seems to be a very common fault on 987 and 997s.
There is always this option http://www.climarepair.com/porsche-peeling-knobs-a...

I have this on my car and although it isn´t the panacea, it really improved the look of my interior to the point I really don´t pay attention to the air conditioning unit any more... For me it´s more than enough
Cheers
So there is news, they launched replacement switches!Cheers

If its just the two rotary switches on the left and right that are sticky then they really do clean up well very easily. I used hand sanitiser (mild alcohol based) and a old toothbrush and after a few cleans came up like new but obviously without the soft touch coating. That apart they looked brand new.

Are you referring to the a/c or radio? On my Boxster the rotary radio dials have gone all horrid & sticky while the a/c controls are just peeling & look rubbishDavid W. said:
No problem with the climate switches but round radio and sat nav switch rubber had gone sticky, 2 new ones from OPC will see it right for another 12 years.
Thought that was just me! One day they’re fine, next day both my radio “knobs” have gone sticky (chuckle). Reminds me of my old bangers built in the 80s/90s, they used to do that.Doubledeelv said:
