I've made contact with a company called 'Specialist Cars' in North Yorkshire http://www.specialistcars.net/ asking about finding and shipping over a VW Beetle from Japan for me. They have advertised several of their vehicles here in Piston Heads and the procedure is that I have to give them a 500 or 1000 pound deposit for them to start looking, which is refundable at any time if I want them to stop looking.

Before I go ahead with it I just wondered if anyone else has used them and can recommend their services etc?

Thanks in advance!

But that deposit would go towards the car in the end anyway. I'm looking to spend £5000-6000. Is that deposit way too high then?

I think that's 2 separate companies?

£5000-6000 is a decent budget for a Beetle, why do you want a Japanese import one? I don't think that any of the cars I ever imported from Japan had any history, so you'll never be able to back any of the mileage claims up. I would imagine that some of the parts are JDM only on them, so if you need anything unique you could be stuck.

I'd bin the a/c if you did buy one though!

Hmm the 'proprietor' of the company I am emailing with is called Kristian.

Well The import models seem like a great idea since the cars are in superb condition generally - body and engine. Compared to hidden rust bombs here in the UK.. UK ones of similar standard seem to be be way overpriced (9000+).

But if anyone knows any contacts they can share where I might be able to source good solid Beetles from within the UK I'd be really grateful!

Just hold out...

I've been to see sooo many over the past year - and walked away from them all.

Then a few weeks ago, I bought this... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

What years are you looking at?

I visited about a fortnight ago to look at one of their cars. I would exercise caution when dealing with this company. The car I viewed was a long way short of its description. I had a good look at the recent imports and they were in poor order. Christian could win a gold cup for car salesman's patter. I found it hard to reconcile what was before my eyes with the company's website. I am sorry to be so negative.

Edit: to be clear, the company the OP asked about is nothing to do with Mark Mullen's company (which has an excellent reputation in Porsche circles).

How do you know they are in superb condition? Have you seen them? It's an awful risk buying something that old from half way round the world without seeing it?

Are you on VZI? if not, hop on to Volkszone and sign up to the forum. I've not heard of these guys, so you might want to ask on there if anyone else has

Different company. That is Specialist Cars of Malton:

This is Specialist Cars of Tockwith near York.

That looks dodgy, like it's trying to be a rip off of Specialist Cars of Malton - A reputable company very involved with Pistonheads.

Thanks a lot everyone for your replies. I'll stay away then and look for Beetles here in the UK.

That is a beautiful Beetle you have there. Enjoy it!! I'm looking at any 1600 engines from 1971 onwards (I used to have a 71 1302 super beetle flat screen with the old style dash and steering wheel which I loved, but I understand those a little harder to come by), so I'm open to anything after 71 too. Where did you find that beetle?

I am a member at volkszone and posted a wanted ad but noone replied!

I found mine on eBay... bid up to £4200 and was the highest bidder but didn't meet reserve. Opened dialogue with the seller and paid just south of £5k for it.

Happy to help you with your hunt... where abouts in the UK are you based?

Still it up in the main chat.

I was lucky and found mine locally through a specialist that I use. It might be worth asking the local VW restorers/mechanics if they know of any cars for sales. Some of the best ones are sold through word of mouth

Try Paul Coster at Auto Prestige - He is importing form Japan at the moment and has a contact onsite to view cars so nothings unseen.

are you sure this should be deleted?
OP asks if they have any knowledge of a dealer selling a classic car, I reply with specific details relating to my own experience of buying a classic car from this garage. That is not naming and shaming that is passing on valuable advice.
my car was (F484 EDB).

I don't really like fat chicks, but that's nice. I'd like to have a bit more of a nose underneath to make sure there's nothing bad under the underseal. Rear quarters line up nicely with the bottom of the doors which is always a good sign too
