What say the legal bods on these? Saw one this morning, obviously designed to fool you into thinking it says Police Notice. A biker was wearing one a few cars ahead, and it had me fooled. I did a second take when I saw he had a multi coloured helmet and a standard bike, and then realised it says Polite Notice.

I think you have been living under a rock. These have been around for at least five years, mainly seen in these parts on well-proportioned horse riders.

Yep, all the horsey types round here have them.

To be fair, most people round here are smart enough not to go blasting past a horse and rider. Its idiotic. But for the hard of thinking, that brief moment of "is it the bab or not?" makes them slow down.

Same here, invariably seen stretched across the mass of one of the local behemoths sat astride some unfortunate horse. I wonder if horses are having back problems more often because the riders are getting so much fatter?

15k posts, 46 months, and appears to have not seen one of the countless threads on these or the equine variety before on PH?

Yeah, I'm not biting.

Usually seen on fat middle aged women committing acts of cruelty against horses. Can safely assume the wearer is a total knob 99% of the time.

laugh

I've had the same thoughts about the horses too.

Move to south Oxfordshire. All the horse riders around here are total babes wearing very tight riding breeches. The bikers are still big ugly dudes, but, hey, you can't win 'em all.

As for the legal issue, there isn't even the remotest beginning of one. It's a polite notice. No one is actually pretending to be a police officer. Slow down a bit near bikes and horses; it makes life chiller, and if you get one of the horsey hotties, you may even enjoy the view.

The makers of these were on Dragon's Den a while back, they did clearly state that they had run this past the BiB (although which part of the BiB I don't know) before making/selling these and were given the all-clear. As I recall they were seeking funding to make other versions of kit all bearing the same legend. Meaden coughed to owning/wearing one herself. If they succeed, the BiB will end up having to have a different logo themselves otherwise everyone will ignore them as well!

I see people on bikes wearing these every day and it invariably provokes from me the inner thought "tit".

How you proceed after (if) you realise they don't read POLICE is up to you, it usually doesn't take long to overtake and see the wearer disappearing in your rear view mirror - unless you're a pervy resident of South Oxfordshire in which case you'll slow to a crawl and drool.

Slow to a crawl and drool? You say that as if it were a bad thing.

Manners makyth man!

This thread reminds me of the great and glory days of that noisy idiot in his chavved-up TVR who got into legal bother when he yammed it past some horses, and his even more absurd dad who came on here to argue the toss. Whatever happened to their appeal to the Supreme Court of the Galaxy?

what is acceptable passing speed? 20mph with plenty of room? Some riders find this ok others expect 5mp. No idea what nag riders expect

Exiled to the chav part of Alpha Centuri, which is a bit like Basingstoke.

There's a quote from a horsey site somewhere where a police officer answers the question of whether they're impersonating a police officer or not, it's only worthy of note for how she manages to use so many words without actually saying anything or answering the question!
