Hi all.

Looking to spend upto £40k on a car.

The car is my second car, due to having a company car, so will only be used weekends, and the odd occasion.

I'm looking for a car with minimal depreciation, average running costs (20-25mpg), decent interior/seating position and a turn or speed.

The only alternatives I can think of are Porsche 997 911 Carrera S, Cayman, TVR Tamora/ Tuscan.

If anyone can think of any other alternatives I am open to suggestions. I don't fancy a Caterham/ Elise style car, as I think they are too minimal for road driving, and suited more for track.

Thanks.

Could get a 996 Turbo for that money. Or a 997 4S. Yeah. I like the wide body 911s heh. Quite a few to pick from too.

To me the 996 is very dated now, and showing its age, cant argue with its performance though.

The 997 4S is a good shout, I'll have a look, although I think the 2wd version may be more enjoyable?

Yeah. The 996 is showing it's age I suppose. I've always loved them despite people considering them a somewhat ugly duckling in the 911 line up. Interior is definitely a bit meh if you're spending £40K. Then again you're not paying for the dash when you buy a Turbo. They do seem to be appreciating though. Same with the 996 4S. You used to be able to pick them for around £15K around a year ago and now it's at least £20K it seems.

RWD perhaps more enjoyable. I've not driven a 4S, just GT3 so can't say personally.

If you're looking for a second car then I'd personally be looking for something more exciting/special than a jumped up 1 series (regardless of how well they are rated). Your suggested alternatives seem far more appealing to me. I'd be looking at T350, Sagaris, Cayman gts, Aston v8 vantage, z4 m coupe, r8 or some form of 911. If it were my money smile

Like some of the ideas!

The Aston running costs scare me.
Lotus Evora I'll have a look at.
Audi R8 running costs also concern me.
I don't know enough about TVRs so will do some more research into them also.

Don't be too concerned about R8 running costs, probably no more than any of the other cars mentioned. £40k though is scraping the very bottom of the barrel though,if you could even find one at all at that price it would probably be a bit of a dog.

Yeah. Just because you can buy an R8 or even a 360 for £40K doesn't mean you should. Risky as hell.

+1

Minimal depreciation, great fun to drive (I prefer to the 911 having driven both extensively though obviously personal pref).

Edit to add, the 1M was one of my other ideas before I bought the R.

Something like this will be a good idea if you want something that will appreciate.

I can't see them being worth less than 60k in 5 years.

You should either have less money or more imagination. Seriously £40k spending money on a weekend toy gives you f'ing sh*t loads of options.

Faced with a similar budget and a desire for limited depreciation and running costs, I ended up with... a BMW 1M. But I needed something that we (me, Mrs G and Baby G) could all fit into with enough space for a week's luggage. For me, that counted out a whole load of stuff I'd have otherwise considered - including the Cayman R which gets rave reviews.

So if you need a bit of practicality with your weekend fun, I'd heartily recommend the 1M. But if you don't, then I have to say that I'd have been tempted towards something more focussed or exotic. Or perhaps just the nicest Porsche 993 manual targa I could find for my budget...
