Top Five at five: WRC liveries

Here are PH's five favourite rally liveries, now's the time to share yours!

Apologies first off - 'Top five at five' is late. As the name implies, this story will be a five-car shortlist published at five in the afternoon. Well, there or thereabouts...

Picking up where 'Dab of oppo(sition)' left off, this story is a conversation starter as much as anything. Nowhere on the Internet has stronger opinions than PH, with thousands of posts every day, so why not encourage that even further? The top five will most often be cars but could well expand; let's see how the response is!

So we'll start with a nice easy one that everyone will have an opinion on: Top five rally car liveries. Why? Well Dan's NotImpreza is returning to its maker very soon and Subaru's reputation has been built largely on stage success; what more excuse do you need to discuss rally cars? See below for our (fiercely debated) choices for the five and be sure to submit yours below. Any more vids gladly welcomed too, of course!

Lancia 037 Martini
No discussion of any motorsport livery would be complete without Martini. On track and stage it has made some truly spectacular-looking racing cars. Our choice? The Lancia 037. Last two-wheel drive car to win the WRC, overshadowed a little by Lancia's other rally cars (more on that soon) but crucially so well suited to those red and blue stripes - phwoar!

Watch the video here.

Subaru Impreza 555
Arguably the most iconic livery of the 90s - though the Castrol Celica may have something to say about that - every rally fan of that decade will have an 555 Impreza story to tell. It was of course a time built heavily on UK success too, with both Burns and McRae taking rally wins. The gold wheels, blue paint the boxer burble and '555' proudly emblazoned down the flanks; it's an evocative combo!

Watch the video here.

MG Metro 6R4 Rothmans
Rothmans had to feature, but on which car? The Metro 6R4 just edged out the MkII Escort with those stripes streaking high up the spoiler, the Rothmans text across the chin and the colours cloaking a wonderfully butch body. Combine the livery with the Brit built link and that howling V and you have a rally car people still get excited about now.

Watch the video here.

Toyota Celica GT4 Castrol
Castrol and Toyota are inextricably linked, what with those JGTC Supras, the Corolla and many Celicas; the white, green and red had to feature. That the Castrol Celicas are associated with one of the most legendary cheating scandals in rallying history. So it's significant as well as looking great. Does it make your list? Share below!

Watch the video here.

Lancia Delta Integrale Repsol
What was that about Lancia's other rally cars? Here Delta gets the vote over Stratos because more us were watching rallying in the Delta's time than the Stratos. Therefore Repsol beats Alitalia. Just. Sorry! But those bold, vibrant Repsol colours worked so well on the Delta's quite boxy shape, especially with some very bright mud flaps too.

Bit of Group B for ya...available as a factory option too, but a bit more subdued.

That Martini 037 is probably my favourite, but the '82 308 isn't far behind for me:

Tour de Corse:

And on the Monte:

sorry but the only thing that looks any good in Repsol colours is...

obviously not very good on the snow and gravel sections.

Another livery I love, Stig on his way to the '79 Swedish win (first turbo win?):

A firm favourite of mine is the simple design Ford went with for the French round of the WRC in 2011, possibly not to everyones taste but it looked really aggressive.

there's loads of great liveries been applied to WRC cars for years. Some of the best are run and hardly seen on National events too!

I love this Renault 5 livery. Pretty sure I had a matching Burago model when I was a kid.

I'm and artworker and a client of mine wraps vehicles, both commercial and supercars, and we've discussed offering a service where between us we could artwork and apply iconic race liveries to the modern equivalent of classic race and rally cars.

This Renault 5 livery could look great on a new 16v Clio.

Wtf is with these Cossie liveries???

Seriously? Rothmans Escorts were iconic and a very large part of that was because they were successful. Repsol Cossies as iconic when they were unremittingly st and in a very deep shadow cast by successful Repsel clad Integrales? Knock it off.

And no Celica should ever be selected over a Stratos for any reason. Esp when combined with Alitalia!

Sometimes I despair frown

The Metro st chosen over a Vat 205 or Stig Quattro in full warpaint isn't even worth commenting on.

That does look good, nice to see a bit of modern machinery in and among all this nostalgia.

But wait - what about...?

And surely the Martini livery looks best on an Integrale...?

Or a 911...?

And whilst we're on Porsches...

Nope. Still can't decide.

I'd go with Computervision for the 6R4, to me that is the 6R4.
