Hyundai 'N' performance at Frankfurt

Hyundai ramps up its fast car push with a Vision Gran Turismo concept, a new rally car and the RM15

Now Hyundai is being a little cheeky here. It talks of "showcasing its high performance sub-brand N" at Frankfurt, a brand that will "drive future performance-oriented and race-track-capable models forward". Great. Except none of the three cars being exhibited is even close to a production car. Oh...

First up is the Hyundai Vision Gran Turismo car, joining Mercedes, Subaru, Mini and many others in creating a car for GT. It's said to highlight "sustainable technology and race car design", throwing in the word "potential" to say just where fast Hyundais could be by 2025. Don't underestimate the influence of Gran Turismo either; think how many in their 20s and 30s are now coveting the Jap metal introduced to them by early GT games. Could it be that young kids now may want a fast Hyundai at some point thanks to cars like this concept?

Back to somewhere near reality, the RM15 concept seen at Seoul will be shown in Europe for the first time. It wasn't for production then, it isn't for production now, but if we keep hassling Hyundai then they have to give in, right? A 300hp, mid-engined, rear-wheel drive manual coupe? Come on!

Finally, "a preview" of the latest i20 rally car will also be on the Hyundai stand. Based on the new i20 supermini, it's Hyundai's attempt to combat the Volkswagen dominance of the WRC. First event will be the Monte Carlo in January. Now hurry up with the road car already!
