Hi

So after being made aware of the bubble bodywork issue, it appears that it's on every flipping Vantage I look at.

So here are the bubbles on one I'm looking at, it seems to be right by the chrome trim.

Any idea how much it might cost to repair? I would expect it to be done by a good SMART

Thanks

Not sure what a SMART is (apart from a very small car). Who are you buying it from? If from a dealer then make it a condition of the sale and then it costs you nothing. If privately then it has to be taken into account in the price but I can't give you an estimate as both of mine had tiny bubbles in front of the mirror and were sorted as part of the sale (main dealer). Others will be able to give you more idea as I understand AML don't always make a 100% contribution.

When I sorted out the 'bubbles' on my V* Vantage doors (if it's on one it will almost certainly be on the other) I had both doors stripped of all fittings and refinished at Chartwells in Derby. Not cheap, but they guarantee their work for life.

We've all been there.

SMART repairs are no good as they sand out like a sore thumb (I tried), its a panel and blend job I'm afraid.

Aston direct will quote the National Debt of Greece to fix, I found a good independent to rectify and they were superb. I used a place near me (Aylesbury) who specialise in Classic car restoration and they did my bonnet, wings and pillars for 1/2 the cost AM quoted for the bonnet alone.

PM me if you want their details as don't want to be accused of advertising.

If you leave them, they WILL get worse.

Other thank that, Astons are great fun and we all love owning them.

totally agree ....apart from SMART repairs such as dent master for removing car park dings .......minor paint repairs are always visible ..........to the OP I've had some minor bubbling repaired on a wheel arch and roof joint line for £400

I had a lot of paintwork done on my V8V recently, as the drivers door handle had a bubble coming up and also had a couple of bubbles exactly where the posters has his. Also the passenger door had bubbling coming up around the door handle enclosure. So I bit the bullet and went a bit mad!!!I had both doors, door handles and both rear quarters re sprayed, as the rear wheel arches were quite stone chipped. Having had that done, also had some foil protection on both wheel arches and lower sills put on too.

I needed a new inner door seal on the drivers side, as my fat a**e had made a whole in it over time, with me getting in and out of the car. I also had both door outer margin seals replaced, as they were perished a little and coming away from the door frame.

Had it done via my dealer.......all in all not cheap, but they did a good job.

Literally just dropped my car off at my "dodgy" bodyshop. He isn't dodgy, just isn't AM approved. Came across him when I was driving past his sketchy looking unit and it was filled with 10 11 12 plate German cars. Thought that's weird and went in. He's cheap and takes pride, a beautiful combo! Today he had like 7 cars of which 4 were not even old.He is in Sheffield though.

On the DB9 he is painting :

Both doors
Both Wings
Front Bumpber
Both Sills
Both Rear quarters
Boot chip next to badge

Rear quarters were purely for blend reasons as the actual corrosion is on doors and bubbling on fibreglass wing which he says is due to some muppet probably baking it in the past.

£500.

Did the M5 not that long ago. £350 , bonnet, bumper, 1 sill, 1 door, 1 rear quarter rust repair, 2 wings.

It's bordering easier to paint than detail however at the end of it you need to spend a good 3-4 hours cleaning up after him as he makes a right mess of polish.

Mine had a small amount of bubbling at the bottoms of both doors before I bought it...

...well it had to be blended in, didn't it?!

You may have well just got the whole car done. Still probably looks good now. What was wrong with the paint bubbling or stone chips?

Sorry, that wasn't very helpful was it.
I'm not sure what would've cost as I had it included as part of the sale.

The independent dealer had it done at an Aston approved body shop and told me the warranty covered it..?

Ross - my bodywork chap came back and reckons 2-3k to sort mine out (you have the pictures). This covers the front up to and including the doors and roof.

Last year I was quoted ~7k for a full respray by an Aston service agent who doesn't use an Aston body shop (but restores DBs etc).

As others have noted, I would avoid patch repairers. The problem will come back if you go that route.

I reckon both doors are going to be 800-1k.

Sump's price is incredible...but I do struggle in accepting that the right level of prep will be done to sort the problem properly for that money, even in Sheffield (Steel city native here, exiled to the sarf). Sump - if you have good photos of the DB9 when done I'd be interested in seeing it. Even better, if you'd be happy for me to have a look I'm up there reasonably regularly (around the Mosborough/Pystal Creaks area).

It won't have the right level of prep that John had. Not even close to it, that's essentially a full strip which IMO is a little OTT but required if you're looking for utter utter perfection.

The catch with my bodyshop is the clean up after. I had some overspray that I had to clay out and then really throughly clean it inside and outside.

These pics are from last year, he did the front bumper, sills and boot lid. I'll take some good pics for this years work when it comes back in 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone for the advice and responses.

Murph, I don't think I got the photos of what needed doing. However, the price for the doors seems reasonable.
