I've just bought a car (not a TVR), which has a TVR engine in it, apparently from a '97 Chimaera. The engine itself was bought off eBay in 2010, and came from a fire damaged car. Other than that, all the eBay ad said was that it was a 4.0. However, the only stuff I can find online regarding the engine number suggests it's a Rover factory engine 3.9 EFI for a Morgan. My motor doesn't have EFI.

Can anyone tell me exactly what I've got?

CR 9.35:1. Engine no: 47A08xxx B.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Yep, I believe that engine number was originally fitted to a Morgan +8. Not a TVR I don't think.

Interesting... It definitely came out of a TVR. I've seen a photo.

A photo of the engine in a Tvr or a photo of the engine number in the car?

A photo of the fire damaged TVR that the engine came from. And pictures of the fire damagd engine itself.

I know it's probably a red herring, but I have a nice billet TVR engraved oil cap on it, but the rocker covers aren't engraved.

Did TVR not use a 9.35:1 3.9/4.0 engine in 1997?

Seem to recall posts where Morgan numbered engines went to TVR instead.

That's fantastic, thanks thumbup

It led me right to the "secret" second engine number on the front of the block, which tells me it is, indeed a Chimaera engine, with a 9.8:1 CR.

I assume that torque settings (bolts, not performance) are the same, so I can use the factory Land Rover ones?

in the late'90s/early '90s Morgan had an 'exclusive' with Rover for the RV8 engines. When TVR came along offering higher volumes Rover where experiencing 'difficulties' so the exclusivity went out the window but the blocks supplied were from the Morgan castings hence the Morgan identifier on there. I think the TVR engine # is under the offside exhaust bank at the front.

I found the Morgan number under the nearside exhaust manifold, and the TVR number on the nearside front face of the block.
