A bit of indecision regarding the S rebuild. I've got to the stage where it's all tidying up wiring and detail work before it goes off to be re-trimmed. I've tested the door speaker wiring, the window mechanisms, electric mirrors and door locks and need to decide if I should go with rear speakers in the bulkhead too. I was also considering the modification for the targa stowage system which I checked out in some cars on the recent Eurotour. That seemed a good idea but I also like the clean, uncluttered look of the rear bulkhead, especially with new carpet and seats, etc..

So... The merits of each are - leave alone and enjoy the new carpet look, fit 2 rear spaekers and enjoy the better sound (when possible) or modify it for easy storage of the roof panels..

What are your thoughts??? scratchchin

Rear speakers are a no brainer (and some tweeters) and leave the roof panel mod unless planning a lot of touring two up.

I've yet to try the roof panels flat on top of everything idea.... job for today wink

Remember the speaker backs will protrude into the boot space and you will need to make up some pods to protect them. Like this...

When the hood is down and the shelf has stuff on it the speakers are covered anyway, so is it worth the effort.

Wait a minute. You're not one of those nancys who drives with the roof up are you? laugh

Speakers? Radio? I just love the sound the car makes and it is very rare for me to have the radio on except on rare long motorway slogs, and occasionally when stopped. For my use the door speakers are unrestricted and fine. I seem to always have jackets, etc etc on the rear shelf which would restrict speakers and I certainly wouldnt want them intruding into the boot, nor would I want yet more wiring.

Now, carrying the hood in the most convenient way is a FAR higher priority. Whether you use the bulkhead method or the crossed panels method (only possible on later cars), speakers in the bulkhead wouldnt be on.

Alan's Roof Stowage Enclosure (A.R.S.E.) mod is the clear winner for me Tel.

It saves all that faffing about loading and unloading the boot to put away / retrieve the targa panels every time there's a monsoon. So much more convenient to just slide them into that nice neat cubby hole. I put mine in with the curved edge facing up, like a sled, so I can still put stuff on top of them and it stays in place.

This, coupled with the fact that the only time I listen to the radio is if I'm stuck in a traffic jam. On the move, I much prefer to listen to the lovely sound of those twin pipes. Now THAT's music!!! ears

The horizontal method of stowing targa panels in my S1 is not possible, they will not get past the boot catch assembly. And if you fit bignormous speakers in your bulkhead, you won't be able to store the panels this way either. So door mounted is the best option. Or shell out for a Surrey roof. ( I don't think they do a Suffolk one. ) Ask Max if he's happy with his.

An added benefit of A.R.S.E. is secure stowage of your socket set etc. if you make it with a raised upstand. It stops it sliding about all over the place. If you wanted to be doubly sure over yumps, you could fit bungee straps as well.

Finally, you could proudly tell everyone that you have done the A.R.S.E. mod and do they want to see it? wink

Win win win!

Terry - the roof debate has been around for quite a while - this earlier link covers very similar grounds too. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... for roof panel storage???&mid=0

Personally, being the fair weather girls blouse Joe refers to, I'm not about to hack up my boot to fit in the panels - I think I will go down the surrey folding roof route if any (I certainly don't have the skills or balls to follow Joe's mod). Speakers I won't bother with as I can't hear a damn thing over the noise mine makes (If anything I should also remove the front speakers and turn them into little storage compartments). The surrey roof option is very expensive, but its also very neat, with no impact on boot space, but will kill the shelf space.(which the slash and slice mod does too.)

Decided not to take up the ARSE Pete/Glen.. Much as it's a great idea (but possibly painful), I'm in two minds about it so - I'm out. As for the sound system Richard, I too love the engine sound and I know that the stereo is mostly drowned out by it on short sprints, but when you've got a 500 plus stint to do on a tour it's nice to listen to something other than your passenger belching, grunting or even speaking (sometimes)..!!! On the last Eurotour, I was passenger (drove it some of the time) in Andy's 4.6 V8 wedge and that thing was noisy, but it did have a 4 speaker stereo system and we could listen to it most of the journey. Obviously, this was always below the legal maximum of any road we were driving on at the time......angel

I'm with you on this one Terry (despite being a Girls Blouse, according to Joe) - I wont be taking up the ARSE option either, despite being open (roof) minded. When you went past us on the journey home, we were doing a lowly 5 mph, which explains why you went past us at around 65 more of those very british mph, that no laws were broken. All makes sense now. There was no need to deploy your roof anchor after all.

I use my i-Pod with ear phones and this blocks out all the road & wind roar as well so you can listen to what ever without blowing out your ear drums thumbup Completely blocks out passenger babble as well laugh

I think that this (healthy) debate shows that we have a diverse, but like minded group on this forum. In other words, there is no correct answer but the shared experiences help everyone.

I have the A.R.S.E modification which I completed just before the EuroTour this year. IMHO the best modification so far for J-LLO. The rear shelf only loses a little depth in the cabin. Of course, if you wish to access the panels quickly this does require some thought as to the cargo resting on the roof sections. The ability to fit the roof without even opening the boot, or disturbing luggage is a hitherto unknown luxury. My boot takes two soft bags plus other small boxes. Those carrying the running spares sit above the new compartment in the boot.

However, extra speakers would not be much use for me as I do not have a head unit in my TVR. Each to their own.....

The Surrey roof is clever but has some disadvantages. It is heavy and you would need to see if you can manage to install this on your own. It fits some cars better than others! You cannot have the rear section of the roof down if you stow this behind the seats. If you put in the boot you compromise the capacity as well.

Chacun a son gout! Sorry could not find Any French accents.

Speakers are good...got some in the back of mine, but not with Joe's super covers, mine just have the carpet over them.

Hardly every use them however as the best noise with the top down is a TVR exhaust...

But they have their uses occasionally....like listening to "on days like these" whilst driving down an Alp.

I can't take the credit for these; they were in the car when I got it.

They would be quite easy to make though once you found a suitable mould. Like this maybe?

I agree that it fits some cars better than others. This is the case between Samy and Reserve.

The weight is no more than one of the targas and I can fit on my own. I've also fitted it behind the seats with the rear section down too. Happy to show you next time we meet up!

One thing I would say is that the edge detail needs a better / custom fit. I did chat to Joe about a revised edge detail but I may just have a crack at the convertible mod!

Are they made by Sony Mick? I've just bought a 'new old stock' Sony head unit for the S and it would nice to match it all up... Any pics at all? T
