Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution: Spotted

Regular rally specials out of reach? There is another way!

Everyone knows that homologation cars are expensive right now. Almost regardless of the era or the discipline, cars designed for competition are in really high demand. E30 M3s, Sierra Cosworths and Delta Integrales are still at big money, with more modern stuff also rising; see the £40K Impreza 22B.

Spoiler and arches and mudflaps? Yes!
Spoiler and arches and mudflaps? Yes!
However, here's the alternative: the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution. Yep, a Mitsubishi Evo that isn't a Lancer. For the ultimate Evo - the Tommi Makinen Edition - you're now looking at over £20K for the best. This Pajero is £12,995.

And don't think the Pajero is some kind of poor relative. The first Pajero to win the Dakar was in 1985 and from 2001-2007 it won every single event. This particular car was built between 1997 and 1999 for homologation into the production-based T2 class, but actually won outright in 1997 and 1998. In 1998 Pajeros took the first three places, five hours ahead of anyone else.

But then this was no ordinary Pajero, even as a road car. The track was 125mm wider at the front, 110mm wider at the rear and with new dampers that cost twice as much as a standard car to replace. Look at those arches! The suspension introduced another superb acronym (ARMIE) into the world of JDM specials, those letters standing for All Road Multilink Independent suspension for Evolution. This when a regular Pajero had a rear live axle.

No danger of kerbing wheels with those tyres

The engine was a 3.5-litre V6, making the 280hp that all Japanese manufacturers agreed to back then. With 257lb ft also, it should be enough for 60mph in eight seconds. This is the kind of performance 4x4 we can get on board with!

So it's a pretty special car. That's before you mention the limited run of just 2,500 cars, the mud flaps, the aluminium panels, the uprated diffs, the Recaro seats... It's the real deal, make no mistake. This car is for sale at Fast Classics, whose stocklist is crammed full of stunning cars. While you're hardly going to be comparing PajEvos at local dealerships, it's pleasing to see a comprehensive history file and a car in entirely standard condition. From what can be gleaned from the pics, it appears to have been very well looked after.

Sure, you could go and buy a newer Lancer Evo for less money. Very, very few people will have any clue how significant it is. And being homologated for Dakar simply isn't as well known as WRC, DTM and the like. But that doesn't make the Pajero any less intriguing, and it's a damn sight more PH worthy than anything made by Mitsubishi now. One for the rally connoisseur!

There's something incredibly appealing about this! Very few cars on the road these days make me look twice but this is so cool, I guess it's the rarity combined with substance. I'm very tempted to have a look!

Think these are super cool.

Saw one parked at the side of the M1 a couple of weeks ago though frown

Looks suitably testosterone-fueled.

The svelte integration of that wing mirror -- up by the headlamps -- is a nice touch.

For some reason I always thought these had the EVO engine and not a V6.

Whilst it's not even vaguely even the same league, for a bit of homologation fun on the (very, very) cheap, the Suzuki Ignis Sport is rather brilliant. Massively over-engineered and great fun to drive.

Fantastic things. Remember reading somewhere that the auto gearbox was a weak point....but provided it's no different from the regular shogun box arch 2.8td there should be plenty in scrap yards.

I was a passenger in a nearly new one for a few long journeys.

An amazing experience. The stand out memory is the sheer presence the thing had; both from bystanders and traffic seeing it bearing down upon them and quickly moving out of the way.

Having said that the owner had to start almost every journey by topping up the engine oil and carrying a couple of gallons (yes, GALLONS!) on board to top-up with en route!

Love it. Many, many years ago I was offered some lighthearted physical violence by none other than David Jefferies. Because I was leaving against his much-beloved example of a Ralliart Pajero. Rumour was that he was pretty handy with it over the Island too, having caused some post-lap proper vomiting in a friend of a friend.

Stunning car! I was lucky enough to drive one that Mr Don Logan's MUM had. She loved it too. Sadly we loved it less when we had to wait 6 months for a spare part to be shipped over from Japan.

(but FAB car anyway)

Yep!

1 long wait was a replacement auto gearbox and the other was a stub axle I think!

AWESOME thing though, my Mum was 65 when she owned that! :-)

Even a bog standard V6 Shogun/Pajero is a very nice thing... utilitarian but comfy and the V6 makes a lovely sonorous tone...
