Nissan Titan Warrior Concept - Detroit 2016

Well it was hardly going to be shy and retiring with a name like 'Titan Warrior' now, was it?

Yes, it's just a concept. Yes, it will never, ever come to the UK. And yes, some might say it's a little over the top. But at a Detroit show where autonomous driving and fuel cells seem to be the predominant theme - more on those to follow - you'll hopefully excuse a little childish glee at a sodding great pick up. Welcome to the Nissan Titan Warrior Concept.

It has been created by Nissan Design America, exaggerating the themes of the standard Titan XD pick up (launched last year) to presumably make the production car more attractive. Or, as the official Nissan line goes: "the TITAN Warrior Concept was conceived to share our team's pride and excitement to be back in the truck market in a big way."

So there's the standard 5.0-litre V8 diesel (!) and six-speed automatic gearbox, but then everything else is beefed up rather substantially. Because Nissan wanted the Warrior to have an "even more powerful presence than the original", this car has been raised by three inches. This also means that 37-inch off-road tyres can be fitted, with uprated suspension unique to this car. The Warrior is also three inches wider, presumably just to intimidate people a little more.

Then the grille and headlights were made to look more "menacing", the arches were flared and four huge exhausts were added. Plus those bonnet vents are said to be functional. And what's an off-road pick up without roof lights?

Inside the Titan Warrior is an interior "conceived to handle the abuse experienced on an extended off-road excursion in comfort and style." So there are new seats, a steering wheel milled from one block of aluminium (that's what it says here) and cupholders that can warm drinks (for your morning coffee driving out to the lake) and cool them too (for a celebratory Coke after a successful day's fishing).

There may be a more overtly off-road Titan in due course - think Toyota Tundra Bass Pro edition - but it seems unlikely. For now let's celebrate a quite daft and rather brilliant motor show concept done just for the hell of it. That doesn't happen too often.

Watch the teaser video here.

"Titan Warrior"? Trying a bit too hard there, I think. It may have a 5L V8 and knobbly 37" tyres and a crew cab but in its heart of hearts this car would secretly far rather be sat at home listening to classical music while drinking a nice glass of wine and reading this fascinating book it ordered from Amazon about the relationship between Renaissance art and the Catholic church.

The names they give these things are such un self concious examples of fragile masculinity, it's great. I think I'd have to take the badges off my Trojan Warrior Ringstretcher crew cab as soon as I got it home.

I love the look of this, and then I think what an idiot I would look parking at the office and clambering out of it.

I'm loving the use of carbon fibre on a 2.5 ton truck! Every gram counts, right?

I wish we had of been able to find a decent Titan when we were in Canada. Although the F150 we ended up with was cool it's just not called a TITAN!

I'd love one as a tow car for a track car that was equally nutty.

They ought to make it (minus the carbon or whatever).

I want one and so it seems, does everyone else.

Not quite sure why this is featured under 'Japanese cars'as its a shameless American made pick-up for the US market and a such, most unlikely to ever come out from their shores in any great numbers?

"The second generation Titan was designed in California, engineered in Michigan and will be assembled in Mississippi. The engines are built in Indiana and Tennessee."

It does sound a bit like an, erm, electronic anal instrusion device. hehe

However, I like it; names suits in a "does what it says on the tin sort of way", looks pretty good, although they all do - the Raptor as others mention and the Ram. There's a degree of one-upmanship with that name though. I reckon the next market entrant is going to need to add the words "nutter" or "bd" to their product name.

W. A. N. T. !

Who cares if you lot aren't going to get it in the UK, send it down here to Aus, I could make it honest.

(Needs a decent layer of dust on it to cover up the ponsey carbony bits)

Grrrrrrrrr, beats chest whilst crushing a beer can.

Oh, addition. Had a good marketing idea for Nissan.

Forget 'Titan', just call it the 'Massive Testicles' or the 'Dirk Diggler'.

Ram not comparable with the Raptor though. The former is a relatively high output truck designed for light off-roading; the latter built to go as fast off road as it can on road.

Look no one cares that it's below average size, and certainly not her, it's the love and effort that is appreciated.

I like it, would be totally pointless in the UK but I'd still want one.
