Honda Civic Type R Mugen concept

Y'know, just in case the standard car was a little too meek and restrained

It wasn't going to take long, was it? The Civic Type R has only been out a few months but already the tuners have their take on it. Set for a Tokyo Auto Salon debut in a couple of days, this is the Mugen Civic Type R.

Yes for one exhaust pipe!
Yes for one exhaust pipe!
Details on the car are pretty light so far, but the pictures should tell you most of the vital information. The front bumper is now even more aggressive, the rear arches are wider, four exhausts are replaced by one and that wing is lighter than standard. See also the new wheels, Mugen badges and what look like some very fancy seats too. The GT3 RS-style front wing vents have gone as well, which doesn't say much for how functional they really are.

Now most Mugens feature some kind of crazy engine upgrades - see the wild FN2 from a few years back - but there's been nothing announced for this car just yet. A nice round 350hp would take it to the Focus RS just nicely...

The Auto Salon is open to the public from January 15-17, so expect more details to be forthcoming then. In the meantime, here's a reminder of just how bonkers Mugen Civics can be.

Video here.

A big fan of the new shape Civic, but i'm not sure on this concept. Something doesn't look quite right.

We just need Honda to bring back the Integra with the same turbo VTEC and i'll be happy for life!

Just when you think they couldn't make the new CTR any uglier...

Ugly is sometimes better than bland though. I quite like it actually, looks unashamedly lairy

That looks so much better with a single exhaust instead of four.

Looks top notch.

Bonnet is awful. Just looks dented. Rear wing is smaller than standard. Less/smaller exhausts. Rear wing/wheel arch looks awkward. Let's hope engine work is better!

That is one seriously ugly looking car.

For all the hype on PH, I've yet to see a standard new Type R on the roads.

It seems the buying public aren't stupid after all.

Just LOOK at the proportional relationship between that rear wheel and the rear flank... absolutely god-awful!!. It looks as if it has 16" wheel up front and 15" at the back... I can't even look at that right now... hurl
hehe

I've seen quite a few. From all the new hot hatches with last years number plates this is the one I have seen the most.

For this car I think there is only so far you can push fwd and 300bhp was arguably already over that line.

At least they've put a different alloy on it instead of the monstrosity that the standard Type R is sold with.

I really like it tbh, although I am partial to JDM weirdness in all its forms.

I live in London. I saw two near Swindon just before they were released. I have seen a handful in London. 1 near Cambridge, a few near Bristol and when I used to commute up the M1 until late last year I saw 2.

Well I guess that meets the definition of a few!

I don't know the sales figures but I'm struggling to understand who will buy the new Type R. I'm a Honda fan, having owned a Civic Type R, Integra Type R and an S2000. I owned them all in my early/mid 20's and whilst they weren't new, their lower RRP and subsequent used value meant they were attainable. They also looked suitably aggressive / different to the rest of the Honda range but not in an obtrusive way.

I just can't see, generally speaking, how anyone who can afford to spend £30k on a car being any younger than late 20's. And at that age, personally and professionally, it's hard to get past just how Demon Tweeks the car looks.

I could quite easily turn upto work, or meet a client in something like a Golf R. But doing the same in a Type R? Not sure.

Something like the Focus RS with its devout followers can get away with garish but I just don't think the Type R has as much of a cult following to make that work.

Same here. I think it would look better with twin single exit exhausts though, would help to balance out the back. Never seen the point of quad exhausts on a 4 pot.

Looks like someone has tried to steal the bonnet by using a crowbar and it really doesn't need a Type R badge under the nearside headlight.

I actually think it looks marginally better than the standard car. That's not saying much though, as the standard car is a complete dogs dinner.
