Lamborghini Diablo SV: Spotted

The next big thing for classic Lamborghinis?

Peering eagerly into the Coys auction at last weekend's show, there was only one thing I had eyes for. Apart from the Maserati Bi-Turbo and the Chevette. It was the Diablo SV, an air of malevolence surrounding it despite the sunshine yellow paint. Yes, it had silly bull graphics on it and there were all sorts of other terrific cars around, but that Diablo was The One.

The raging bull!
The raging bull!
And yet it didn't sell, despite a high bid of £150,000. Not so long ago that would surely have bought it, despite being a rare right hand-drive car with very low miles.

Then there's this Diablo SV, also right-hand drive and extremely yellow. Plus of course that edge from being a relatively old supercar now, a glorious throwback to the time when such cars were genuinely terrifying and would not tolerate morons.

Sure, there is a two-wheel drive Lamborghini again and that's great news. No doubt a new rear-wheel drive Super Veloce would raise interest in the old stuff even further as well. But they're different cars now, a more approachable and friendly type of Lamborghini to appeal to a wider customer base.

The Diablo SV does not look approachable or friendly, but it's not hard to see the appeal either. The shape is still so dramatic, one familiar from a million bedroom posters. It's lighter than a regular Diablo and more powerful too. It's manual only and one of the last Lamborghinis to be made before Audi involvement. Don't underestimate the significance of that last point to collectors.

Feeling lucky?
Feeling lucky?
While we're discussing collectors too, it's worth pointing out just how much the Diablo's predecessors are now worth. Good luck trying to find a Miura SV and expect to pay six figures for it. The best Countachs, stuff like the LP400s and 5000QVs, are heading towards £500K. Even if this Diablo is more than £200K - it's listed at POA - there must be potential for it to climb further. That V12 is of course descended from the other two, providing a tangible link back further in Lamborghini's history.

So it looks like a worthwhile investment as well as an iconic supercar. As for driving a Diablo SV, well, who wouldn't want to have a go? To see if the reputation is deserved. Just allow a lot of space... Finally, if a Diablo isn't fast enough for your super fast Lamborghini, it might be worth seeking out a manual Murcielago SV. Yes, they really do exist.

A friend of mine owns a 'normal' Diablo; having experienced it both as a passenger and as a (scared!) driver, all I think is "nice to look at, pig to live with/drive" - definitely a case of Do Not Meet Your Heroes with this one for me.

I totally get this article. Who cares about its dynamics, just look at the thing! The earlier non-Audi cars just ooze flair and aggression before Audi 'sanitised' the brand forever.

You don't need to own one to look, and looking is the best bit of Lamborghini.

Will the prices continue to rise indefinitely?

I don't think so, (and I certainly hope not).

I remember seeing these for £70-80k not more than 4 or 5 years ago, at that price I thought safe investment if the engine doesn't need rebuilding. Now I think engine could have blown 4 or 5 times and the owner would still be quids in with its appreciation.

I remember reading the driving section of the Sunday Times with F40s going for about £140-150k. That's at least a fourfold increase in what, 10 years?

99.99% sure that was my Diablo SV. I owned it from almost new - 12 years. I had it up for sale a couple of years ago on PH, for pocket change really. Unfortunarely divorce forced me to sell it for next to nothing , the dude that brought it really knew he was on to a good thing. I still regret selling it every day, and miss it more than words. Goddammit :'-(

Guys, if you're smart and wish to retain the fruits of your labour, instead of handing it over to a parasite: Do. NOT. Get. Marrried.

My condolences. Sounds like you're a MGTOW now...

Call me weird, but i prefer the SV's to have the graphics on the side

Also, there was a choice of gearing for the SV allowing owners to choose a normal 205mph box, or closer gearing which reduced the top speed to 186mph.

I am staggered. I was at autosports and had a look at that Diablo. It was described as "barely used"! With 16k miles. Most of the panels had splits and cracks and corrosion was evident in several places. The inside was best described as scruffy and I was amazed that there seemed little or no preparation from either auction house or owner. I wondered what it might make, and if the bid of £150k is correct then Diablo prices really are on the rise. Good news for Diablo owners!

I'm with you. Looks so much better with the giant SV on the side.

Has to be exactly like that one too, yellow and black. The only acceptable use of black wheels ever.

Never noticed how similar the front end is to a Lotus Esprit V8 until I saw this one in yellow...

SV's were actually really good drivers cars. Cheaper than the standard VT, as car manufactures didn't charge you more for less.....I loved mine, did 10K miles in a year - then bought another 98SV with the slight power upgrade - it was EPIC. Replaced that with the only 2WD 6.0L Diablo in 2001 - another special from Lamborghini!

You need to experience the car, the factory, the history, the passion and the noise!

As good as the Murci 670SV was and the Aventador/Roadster/SV is (I'd argue that the CF tub is not very Lamborghini like) - this is now not how Lamborghini used to be - and so the Diablo is an end of an era car......Now that has got me thinking......

My 98 car had 530 bhp PLUS i had the factory remove the exhaust valve (pneumatic diaphragm in exhaust to pass drive-by tests) and fit straight through silencer - I also specified Sprint gearing which was 8% lower again than standard SV (making it substantially lower geared than a VT) - that car was bloody quick but would red-line in fifth at about 181 MPH (got there quick though!) - standard cars were geared for 202MPH.

They don't make cars like these any more, and that's exactly why I bought one.
Yes, not the easier car to drive, with very little in terms of drivers aid, and the construction is simple.
But it makes them so much more fun to drive and tinker with.

The car effectively is evolution from the Countach - in build in every way, a tradition which the Murci carried on.
tubular space frame, hand beaten aluminium, minimal comforts, a very raw driving experience - not that difficult or heavy to drive, none of them are - that's just hype from the likes of Clarkson.

I just love it

I must be telepathic , said this here a couple of years ago . They are the perfect car to scratch that Lamborghini itch put there in my childhood while playing Top Trumps a kids card game some 40 years ago . Managed to buy my SV some 5 years ago off Carlo of Top Gear cars with a £3k worth plate that Carlo threw in with the deal to sweeten the sale and made me part with £72k half of which I borrowed from the bank ( my wife had to get a loan as well as I had maxed out on my credit available ) A big commitment just to scratch an itch . Truly thought it would depreciate albeit very slowly so thought I could always sell it if the decision had been a poor financial one and got me into any trouble . After 5 years of ownership nice to know now the old gal has prooved that love is a good feeling to have in your life . Today every dealer in the UK would happily part 150k in order to be convinced that it would be worth the effort to get my car and make them money . Which is nice because that means I scratched that 40 year old itch and I'm 52 now , I'd come away after money spent on her upkeep servicing done from day one by Grimaldi engineering 15k spent on restoration 2 years ago sorting out the underneath nobody will ever see , added 7k miles to the car in 5 years . Running costs plus servicing my itch has cost me around 100k . Easily 10k a year profit if I decided to sell today so I've owned and driven my Lambo for free , infact I've even been paid I just worked out £27 everyday since I shaked hands with Carlo . They say you must be a bit crazy to own a Lambo and I guess I am to have been a tad nervous over buying one . It's essential apart from money to have this in you to buy a Lambo , I knew nothing about cars before parting with 72k and me and my wife maxed out on our credit putting our home at risk . Lambo engine are strong , very strong , check its recent history and any poor early history the car might have experienced , check the reputation of the mechanic who carried out that early work , infact check out the full service history if it's available , sometimes bits get missing , it's missing maybe a previous owner has lost it or thrown it away happens a lot If you are crazy do the deal , only Lambo owners know this nobody else know this . Once you shake hands you will find others like you will welcome you to the dark side . They know you are just the same as they are . Main ingredient you need to buy a Lambo is not money , you need to be crazy like me to be able to scratch that itch and decide to scratch it before you die . You really have one chance at life . I strongly suggest to everyone on earth to take that chance and fulfil their life . Don't matter what your itch is a Lambo or something else , whatever , that itch is annoying , so you can't just forget about it , scratch it as soon as you can . If you don't understand my rambling you need to go back to school and learn to read plain English .
Now ! I am Insane enough to sell ?
No , I'm not insane just a little bit crazy wink
If I ever did sell then you may say I'm insane , however sometime needs must so no being a little bit crazy don't mean you will go insane . Buy or sell no one should really have any worries . If I was a dealer I would put the comments above on the windscreen of every Lambo I needed to sell . Then sit back and biggrin

If you would like a Diablo don't worry , you are already a little bit crazy not insane , you are alive because you can still read , unless you are blind so that won't matter because won't be able to drive one and a blind man who can't read this but you can read this to a blind man and even a blind will be able to see sense in buying a Diablo for himself . Diablo has two seats so even a blind man can buy a Lambo if his itch is annoying and thinks he can't scratch it himself .
Insane people don't buy Lambos , on sane people do who knows everyone is a little bit crazy .
That's why people who prefer Ferraris are insane . And people who prefer Lambos are sane ( but a little bit crazy )
Don't be afraid of the dark side . Because even blind men can see .
Makes sense now eh ! If it don't you have bigger problems than buying a Diablo that you need to prioritise .
Only thing I don't know and you do because no one knows everything is

Do you have the Lambo itch .
Suppose that could depend if you are of a similar age to me , but that's only my best guess

Great news! Is it the red car on your profile? Looks like a 1999 SV with the new dash etc. which is one of the rarest Diablos, way more collectible than the pop up headlight versions. One to hang on to I would suspect!
